Want to buy a pair of 1GB black drive’s but unsure what these model numbers mean?
WD1002FAEX
WD1003FZEX
I looked at the specs and they say both the same so is one an old model…?
Should I look for a particular one?
Thanks in advance…

Hello,
It would seem that this is the case since both models are similar in specs.
You have to root around at wdc.com to find them, but marketing PDFs exist for many drives WDC made in past years. The former has a “Host to/from drive (sustained)” figure of 126 MB/s while the latter has one of 150 MB/s. I’m fairly certain WD1003FZEX is newer (its PDF is the current one). I have no idea why one should be faster because they both rotate at the same speed and have the same 64 MB cache.
Here’s the former: http://wdc.custhelp.com/ci/fattach/get/229985/0/filename/Caviar+Black+Specifications+(English).pdf
Here’s the latter: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/SpecSheet/ENG/2879-771434.pdf
Many thanks for the help…
