Hy,
my new My Passport Essential 320 GB powers off after a few seconds while transferring data (or not). Some times Time Maschine gives an error: “… is in use and cannot be powered off.” This happens by the first backup with time maschine. Now, Time Maschine cannot back up, because the disk is powered off after seconds. I cannot copy data, because the time is too short to do everything before disk poweres off.
I read a lot in the internet about this problem - a new disk does not fix the problem.
Any ideas what to do?
Thanks !
Hi, avoid using USB extension cables or USB hubs, since that could cause problems, you can also try running a test with disk utility, check the link below for the steps.

Thanks for your answer - I called the Support Hotline yesterday. They told me that the problem ist an apple-problem. Nice answer - I will ask in the apple store to help me and never buy a WD again. Merci Support !
But by the way: I never use a hub or something else. I just use the cable that was content of the package I bought from WD. And the Disk Utilities is not the right answer for the problem - there is everything okay.
Another idea? Or should I ask another company to solve the problems? loool
Thanks !
Bye,
iPatrick
That is easy to verify, try connecting the passport to another Mac, if the same problem happens again then the problem is with the passport and you need to replace it, if not the problem is with the Mac. You can also try using another USB cable.
