Hello,
This week I bought a new hard disk WDC WD10 Black. After I plugged it in I noticed that the disk makes noise when it processes information (like they did in old hard drives - chugging).
It works, but those annoying noises. There is a feeling like I have a tractor on the computer.
Also have a feeling working disk pen.
What can you do with it? Whether the company can replace my disk?
Hi first of all you need to test the drive you can get WD data lifeguard for windows or dos from here run a test on the drive and see if it has errors. http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=613&lang=en
Blacks are noisier than a lot of other drives, but that’s how they achieve higher perfromance. I can’t really say if the drive is defective without hearing it, but if you’re not satisfied you could always try returning it to the store and buying something else.
FYI I have a UPS next to me with a fairly noisy fan, then a NAS with 15 5400 RPM drives, then a desktop with another 8 drives. I can hear the drives in the NAS when they all unpark, but the black is noticeably louder.
It is the third black hard disk I bought some years. They never made noise like this … I’ll go to the store and ask to replace it. I hope they will replace it … Thanks anyway
I’m making now Western digital data lifeguard diagnostics Extended Test (2 hours)…
A quick scan showed that the disk is in good condition
Hi yes if it is that bad get it replaced. As for more noise on a 7200 RPM drive I don’t believe it. I use Raptor 10,000 RPM drive’s and I can not hear them at all. The laptop black drive’s may give a bit of vibration but not noise.
Well, the raptors are 3 inch. I’ve still got some of the old WD360GD? drives around, the 36GB Raptors. They are very noisy, I think it’s the ball bearing spindle bearings. I’ve also got a few newer velociraptors and they are a bit noisier than most other drivers too, noise during seek…
Hi Zatick I keep my PC under the desk not on the desk beside me maybe this is why I don’t hear the noise.
