WDTV Live can't see my Windows 7 shares

Does someone has a guide I can follow so the WDTV live can see my Windows 7 machine as a network share?

The devise can see trhe TVersity shares, but not all of the folders added are shown.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit.

We really should have this all gathered somewhere, but let me give it a shot.

First, make sure your Win 7 shares have “everyone” added to them.  Also, turn off passwords on the shares.  That might alone be all you need to do if your other shares are shown but here’s the full routine.

Your Win 7 workgroup should be “WORKGROUP” – probably is but it never hurts to ask.

After you’ve made these changes you need to wipe out the old connections – reset the Live (a hard reset via a paperclip in the side is probably best, but you can also use the software reset in Tools).  Finally, make sure you give it enough time for the shares to show up (usually what happens to me is I select “Net Shares” and then see nothing – I back out and come back in again and see them just fine).

Also, make sure you don’t have Windows Live ID assistant installed on your machine.

Hello,

Sorry to butt in here but your response raises a question with me. You said that the workgroup name should be “Workgroup”. Is this mandatory? My workgroup is not called “Workgroup” and I am having a proplem using Windows media 12 and Windows 7 “Play To” feature. I can choose the WD Live as a play to device bu it can never connect to the device. I was thinking it might be a port on my router that needed to be opend or create a rule for. But maybe it is the workgroup name. Then again, if that was the issue I wouldn’t be able to select it as a device in Windows Media to play to if it was in a different workgroup.

The workgroup of the Live (which defaults to “WORKGROUP”) and that of your shares needs to match.  If it doesn’t, shares won’t work (other things might, but net shares won’t).

I’ve tried all possible solutions, the Live simply can’t see my windows 7 shares. I can only see them as media shares, but I can’t access all my shared folders.

If I select Network shares I can only see my Mac Mini which I can’t access anyway and I don’t need to either. I need to access my windows 7.

Does your Mac Mini see your WIndow 7 shares?

Now that you mention it, I never tried it, because I don’t need the mac to see the PC, just the PC to see the mac. It doesn’t. But the PC can read/write to the mac.

Other Windows 7 machines can see my PC.

If your net shares aren’t being seen by your Mac, then it’s an issue with them most likely.

And how many machines do you have on that network?  Turn them ALL off and then only turn on the one with shares you want.  Reset the Live (with all but one of the Windows machines off) and then try connecting to it.

Thank you for the clarification on that. I looked in the settings for my WDLTV and the workgroup name was what it should be. So now I am still stuck on not being able to contact the media server.

Well, you’ve not tried ALL possible solutions, because if you had, they’d work.

The fact that the MAC can’t see your PC, but other Windows7 boxes CAN makes it sound like you can see Homegroups, but you’re not actually SHARING the folders.

In addition to what mkelley suggested:

  -  Make sure the workgroup name matches

  - make sure EVERYONE is in the permissions

  - Turn OFF password protected shares

Make sure:

 - Network Discovery is ENABLED.  ( in the SEARCH PROGRAMS AND FILES box of the “Start menu”, type “advanced sharing,” then click “Manage Advanced sharing settings.”

  • Make sure you’re looking at the “Current Profile” section, under witch the following should be set:

    + TURN ON NETWORK DISCOVERY

+ TURN ON FILE AND PRINTER SHARING

+ TURN OFF PASSWORD PROTECTED SHARING

Then, browse to where you can see the folder you want to share.

+ RIGHT CLICK the FOLDER and select “PROPERTIES.”

   + Click the “Sharing” tab.

+ If Network Path says “Not Shared,” then we’ve found your problem. Click the “Share…” button.  EVERYONE should be set to at least “Read”.  If Everyone is NOT listed, add it.

+  Ciick “Apply” or OK until you’re out.

i try this and i can´t acess my windows 7 shared folders

have you tried wating for aprox 15 min after you start the WDTV Live? Or you could install “MyLanViewer”. I had the same problem… the shares just wouldent show. then i just left my WDTV on and did something else for a while… and voala. thewre where the shares. win7 do some network ping/update every 15min that triggers the detection. MyLanViewer triggers this whenever a change on the network is detected, or so i understand it. give it a go.

Like many of you, I have experienced headaches with my WDTV Live seeing network shares after my upgrade to Win7.  For what it’s worth, I took a different approach and attached my movies to my WDTV live unit (all stored on an external HDD via USB connection).  I am now able to view movies without a hitch on WDTV (as local storage device) and my PC sees the USB connected drive (WDTV must be powered on and you have select network sharing as an option).  I tested adding and viewing movies from my PC.  The WDTV shows as another device on my network.  Note: It takes a few minutes for the network shared device to show up after powering up the WDTV.

I realize that the network shared folder on PC should work, but I got tired of having to restart the WDTV unit and PC for the shared folder to show.  - Just alternative to a sure headache.

OP: Do you have windows live installed? If so, try deleting it completely.  Restart and see if that helps.  Good Luck

Hey guys,

just a quick one on the PLAY TO feature.

I know when i highlight my entire drive and hit PLAY TO it adds movies highlighted into the media server.

But does this mean that if i copy a new movie divx into that folder i have to select that and do the Play To function to add it?

Samba fix for that:

SPNEGO auth fails when contacting Win7 system using Microsoft Live Sign-in Assistant: https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7577
