I would suggest to use My Passport for Mac which comes in MacOS supported file format so there is no need to reformat in macOS supported file format in order to use in MacBook Pro.

As you are a Mac user I will insist you to go for WD my Book. It is one of the best external hard drive for Mac and it is also compatible with time maxh backup. The drive also offers 256 but AES hardware encryption.
