Windows asks for a network password

I can access my friggin MyBookLive through the internet.  Give it the password, login, see the “shares”, etc.  But from my computer if I try to access the drive through Windows Explorer, it asks me for a “Username” and “Password”.  I did not assign a password to the shares, but it still asks me for one.  I made some shares public and can access them.  But for the “priviate” share it asks for a password.  I created new private “shares” and it DID NOT ask me to give a password, but yet when I try to access them it still asks me for a username and password.  I’ve tried every passwork I know (my logon name and password to the computer, my home network, my router, nothing works.

I have learned to HATE western digital with a passion.  I’ve talked to their tech support and they know less than me, and I don’t know a thing.  Why do they make this so hard?  Trying to connect to this drive through the internet was probably a good idea but WD has no clue of how to make it work (or at least work easily).  I would forget interent access and just plug directly into my computer, but the friggin drive has no usb connection.  Could WD be any more stupid?

What OS Is your computer?

I have had all sorts of problems since I upgraded last month to the new version of WD Smartware. I went on line yesterday to find a new version had been released on 10 Oct to specifically deal with the issues of passwords being required when none had been set. I’ve upgraded to the new software on my Windows machines. Still can’t create shares. Our Macs can’t see the MyBook Live for Time Machine updates any more. Sent off email to WD support. Suspect I will have to re-set to factory specifications and start the whole process on all family’s machines all over again.

Don’t know if this helps but I was getting the same problem today.  I found that in the Dashboard the share was showing as Secure.  Don’t know why.  Only had MyBookLive for 2 days and still trtying to understandf the software!   When I was asked for a Network password I entered admin as the username and admin as the password (nb this was onbviously a default setting and I have since changed the password!).  This unlocked the share and now I can access it without entering a network password.
