I just had the hard drive on my hub fail. It’s only about 18 months old, and the drive manufacture date is Feb 2011.
I was able to get most of the data off by removing the drive and connecting it to a desktop (took nearly 4 days to recover what I could).
Fairly poor I must say, for the drive to fail after that time, and backing up from the hub is a total pain…
Also is the HDMI bug fixed yet? That’s really annoying, I’ve rolled back to the really old firmware before the bug was introduced, but the format support is poor. My son is constnatly complaining that various files that worked fine before the roll back won’t play. But at least it starts up every time now, it got to the point where I had to unplug the power every time to get it to start up in HDMI. (It defaults to composite…)
On a better note, I got a QNAP TS212 and installed 2 x 3TB mirrored drives and it’s integrated nicely with my network.
The HUB is happy to play files from it, even without it’s internal HD, so I guess that’s kind of a win…
Go to the WD support part of the forum and register the hard drive serial number, I am guessing it wil say its still under warranty, then organise an RMA.
I did it with a 1TB external, filled it all in and got a 2TB replacement, great system.
I just put my serial number in the RMA section of the WD website and it says the drive is out of warranty and that it expired on 04/07/2012. How can that be? the drive was manufactured on 10 Feb 2011, and they have a 3 year warranty? so surely the drive should be covered till at least 10 Feb 2014?
It looks like they are using the warranty on the WD Hub rather than the drive warranty.
I have a panasonic plasma TV connected via HDMI to a Yamaha AV amp. The WD box is connected to the yamaha amp via HDMI, so basically it’s HDMI all the way through.
The problem is that if you power off the unit (ie sleep) using the power button on the remote, when you turn the unit back on (wake it up) it defaults to composite video rather than HDMI so you can’t see a thing.
This only occured after a certain firmware update (which I have rolled back to). however the format support is not great in that firmware version, so I’m getting just as many complaints from the family as when the HDMI was on the fritz.
It’s a really common issue, and WD seems not to want to solve it at all. The beta testers are saying it’s been on the issues list for over a year now…
well after a couple of months here the response I got from WD. What a load of rubbish!
They are saying even though the drive itself is under warranty, they won’t honour it because the WD HUB is out of warranty! they have used the arguement, that even though I opened the unit when it was out of warranty, they are going to use that as a reason to void the warranty on the drive! WHAT!
DONT BUY A WD! EVER!
I sympathize with you about the issue that you are experiencing with the internal drive of the WD TV live Hub. I did verify the drive for warranty and it has the expiration date till 9/6/2013. I sent a request to the RMA Dept in order to assist me by reviewing your account. Base on the warranty policies, this drive is not serviceable and the serial number belongs to the WD TV live hub as a Media player. By opening the Media Player completely voided the warranty service of the whole unit.
We have another program to help our customers to upgrade their drives: the customer loyalty program. It is currently up and running after rehabilitation in our web site. In regard to your case, the serial number is not pertaining to a drive. Therefore, I recommend you to contact the WD Store because they may have some offer or program available.
If you have any further questions, please reply to this email and we will be happy to assist you further.
