Backup/connecting usb hdd makes my device not responding

I have tried to backup my device to usb. I noticed the following each time I try to do so:

  • My wd my cloud ex2 becomes irresponsive and not accessible though he webpage

  • The shares names are not copied in full i.e movies becomes ovies on the usb

Every time I do this I have to unplug the cloud and unplug the usb then turn it back on in order for me to open the webpage.

I need to restore the ex2; what should I do to backup my files.
