Hi! I’m a noob so sorry if i ask something stupid. I want to buy a decice to backup files of two computers. One of them is mine and it’s in my home. The other one is in my parents, so they are not in the same local network. If I install WD My Cloud in my house, could my father backup his files in the same device from his own home?
There is an official answer and an unofficial answer. The official answer is the WD Smartware program (free backup program included with the My Cloud) does not support backing up to a remote My Cloud. However, you could use WD Sync to sync the contents of folders on a computer to a remote My Cloud. Or one could use the insecure FTP option to backup or copy files, using a third party backup program that supports FTP, from a computer to a remote My Cloud. Note that FTP is NOT secure, it is possible to intercept the username/password that is transmitted to the My Cloud.
Now the unofficial answer. Unofficially it may be possible to use SSH to modify the My Cloud firmware to allow for secure remote backup to a remote My Cloud. Use the forum search feature (magnifying glass icon upper right), if you haven’t already, to search this subforum for past discussions on how to backup a computer to a remote My Cloud. Options include modifying the firmware to allow for SFTP or similar secure FTP protocols. Or one could setup a VPN connection between the remote computer and the My Cloud network. Do an internet search to learn more about VPN and how to set up a VPN server on one’s local network.
And if you haven’t done so already, read the My Cloud User Manual (https://support.wdc.com/product.aspx?ID=904) which explains the various features/options of the My Cloud and how to use them.
