Box will not stay on, bought 2 and both have same problem

I picked up live smp today and it will not stay on. it boots up, stays on for anywhere from 5 seconds to 30 seconds, and reboots itself. over and over again. I took the first one back and exchanged it and the 2nd one does the same thing. I was looking at upgrading the firmware but I dont think the box will stay on long enough to do it. I have used 4 different outlets in my house that I know work fine, and the same problem. Very disappointed, I can understand a faulty device, but 2 in a row, come on.

If anyone knows a fix, I will try it, otherwise, Im just gonna return this and try something else

Remove it from your network. Does it still reboot?

It isn’t connected to any network. I was planning on using a wireless connection but it wont stay on long enough to set it up.

Hmmm.  Sounds like you have a bad box.

If it’s not connected to any peripherals (HDs, USB devices, network, etc…) other than your TV…

If it’s connected via HDMI to your TV, try unhooking the HDMI and use the composite connection just as a test…

If it does NOT reboot when connected via composite, then that’s a whole different issue – possibly a bug in the firmware as it relates to your HDMI connection.

You might also try plugging it into a different power circuit in case there is a faulty outlet or something.  Seems unlikely two units would have the same problem.  But as Tony says, maybe it’s a strange HDMI also.

Oh, another possibility.  At least for mine, when it is booting, it shows a startup screen for a while, then the signal to the TV goes dead for 5 or 10 sec before coming back.  Maybe you are giving up on it before it comes back?

I’ve had my wdtv 3rd gen since june and last week my box kept on rebooting itself in the same way and i couldn’t do anything.  I called wdtv tech support and they said it sounds like the box needed replacing but it didn’t sound like the most convenient replacement service so i said i’d think about it.

I kept on trying to reset the box without much luck, i tried connecting via ethernet and kept trying the reset button on the bottom of the box  and for some strange reason or luck, the next time it booted up it asked for country etc and allowed me to update to the current firmware too.  It’s been working fine ever since.

I think other people have had this issue, for me it was working fine up until that point but maybe over a few weeks before the box would reboot once every now and then.

Hope you manage to get it working

after several resets I finally it finally stayed on. I manually updated to the newest firmware 1.12.14 . Then I connected to wireless internet, and its back to constantly rebooting. it worked fine until I connected to the network, I even watched a movie from my flash drive. One of the main reasons I got this box was for netflix since i travel for work a lot and dont like carrying my ps3, so if it doesnt work while connected, it is pretty useless to me. Should I try a different, older firmware, or do I have just a bad box?

In that case, you might try shutting everything else that is on yor network OFF, and see if it might be an odd compatibility issue with some other device on your net.

I stay on the road for work, I am in a hotel now. If something else is causing it theres nothing i can do about it

Honestly, this thing is nothing but problems. Ive already spent more time trying to get it to work than I should have to. Very dissapointing. I am just gonna return it and try something else, and after dealing with this, it wont be a western digital product

Returning it was a great decision
