WDTV LIVE SMP will not turn on

I have been having a problem with one of my WDTV Live boxes.  I have two WDTV HUBs and two SMPs (newest generation, newest firmware from WD, no hacks).  The living room SMP sometimes will not turn on.  No info comes from the box at all.  I have to unplug it, plug it back it, then it reboots and works fine.  Very odd.  I never have this problem with the bedroom one, or my HUBs.  I returned the SMP, got a new one, and it still does it!   It’s random.  I thought it might be the HDMI cable so I bought a new one but it still does it.  The problem occurs every few days.

I was wondering if anyone had this issue as I have not seen it on my search through these boards.  If so, what was the cause?

And what happens if you use your other bedroom SMP in the living room.

When you say no info comes from the box do you mean that you see nothing on the TV screen or the led on the front does not come on, or both.

I assume you are putting the box into standby and you are turning it on with the remote. Does the remote work with the other boxes. Have you tried a different remote.

The first thing to let us know is if your box is coming on with the front led on. If the led is on then the box is powered up. If you see the led but no picture then its possibly something to do with the HDMI handshaking between your TV and player.

I have not tried switching boxes. That’s a good idea to help rule out that it has something to do with the Sony TV it’s plugged into.  I’ll give that a shot.

When I say no info comes from the box what I mean is that the screen on the TV displays the same graphic that it does if nothing is plugged into that input.  The light on the box does come on.  I can turn it off with the remote (light goes off), then back on (light goes on) but still no data is getting to the TV.  Remote does work with other boxes.  It’s hooked up directly to a Sony flat screen, no AVR.  I have not tired another remote since the light comes on I assumed it was not the remote.

I suspect you are correct that it has to do with the HDMI handshaking.  I was hoping I was wrong.  It’s an older TV (2008) so maybe that’s the problem.  I was hoping not.

If HDMI handshake is a possibility, have you tried manually setting the WDTV output for the correct resolution for the TV rather than in the auto mode?

Yes, I have tried manually setting it to 1080i 60Hz.  Of course when I reboot the device (unplug it and plug it back in) that gets set back to 720 but that does not seem to be the problem.  The more I think about it the more sure I am that this is a handshake problem with the Sony.
