Can WD Sentinel DX4000 join domain with 1 million objects?

Hi there,

As abovementioned, is it possible?

Please advise.

The Sentinel runs Windows Storage Server 2008 Essentials. It is fully capable of being part of a domain of any size.

However for access/share security, only 25 users may be designated. This means you will need a security group with no more than 25 objects that the DX4000 will use once part of the domain.

It can join ther domain no problem.  Problem is you can not assign a security group to it with the wizzard.  You have to run a command from the command line.  I would have to track that down if you need it.

If you are just backing up desktops no need to have users.  If you want users other than administrator to access files you either create the users with a local account same has the domain account, or create a security group on the domain and run the command to use that group

Morning GHoward :)  If your post had showed up while I was typing I would not have to type so much.  We must have been typing at the same time.

In the Dashboard under Server Settings → Domain there is the option for “Allow access only to users in the folowing group:”.

Checking the box and clicking Browse lets you supply Domain Admin credentials and then brings up a list of all security groups available in your domain. No command line needed thankfully!

I know that is there, but it will fail if there are over some number.  1k or it may even be as low as 500

PS:  Who has a domain with a million objects?

This is from Susan’ site

JOINING A DOMAIN

If you join it to a SBS 2003, 2008 or 2011 standard domain, be sure to move the WSSE to the Server OU in Group policy as it will then show up in the server group in the SBS console.

If you are setting this up to connect to a domain, first begin by building a security group in Active Directory that lists the users that you want to have access to the server.

To join the WSSE to the domain, enter the WSSE console or RDP to the server and launch the WSSE console there.

Click on Server Settings.

Now click on “Domain”

Now enter the name of the domain in the first box and browse to the security group you made in the second box.

If you cannot see the name of the security group, you have more groups than the browse function will allow.

As a workaround we can try to use the WSS Powershell to set the group.  You can use these steps to set it:
Open an Administrator command prompt on the Storage Server
Change to c:\program files\windows server\bin
Run wsspowershell.exe Then type in Set-WSSImportGroup –importgroup
For example: set-wssimportgroup –importgroup “domain users” will import the domain users into the dashboard

If you have more than 25 users, don’t use the group “domain users”. And don’t use domain users if you have extra users that you don’t want to have these listed in the console.

follow up question…

is the shared folder limited access to 25 users only?

what if for example i have this settings:

shared folder name                      security group to access

hr                                                       hr

finance                                             finance

development                                   development

if i given access to hr which has 25 users already does any other security users can access their shared drive?

hr=25 user

finance=25 users

development=25 users

does the access limited to 25 users per shared drive or 25 total users for all shared drive?

25 users for the box

Hi Gramps for a domain user is it 25 concurrent connection?

You can only have 25 usres in the group that joins the domain.  Only 25 PC’s can be backed up.  Only 25 usres can do remote.

But it apears that once it is joined to the Domain you can use the Native server tools to give domain users access to the shares.  More than 25 users would be a violation of the EULA, but it should work.

Don’t buy this thing just becaue I say it shoud work :slight_smile:

I’ll give it a try then…

i give feedback when i finish testing…

many thanks gramps…
