Can't access shared folder on my Mac

Just got my WD TV Live, and set it up according to instructions. I set up file sharing according to the user manual, and upgraded the firmware. Mac is running 10.6.8. The videos icon shows ‘1 new item.’ When I access the shared folder on the WDTV, it says “There is no media available for playback.” I’ve restarted everything, double-checked all the settings, no luck.

I tried just using a 500MB external hard drive, and it’s been compiling my media library for over 90 minutes. 

I’d love to get this thing up and running sometime before Christmas. Any ideas on what I could be doing wrong, or are there any tricks I should know about? Was updating the WDTV firmware a mistake?

If you “just got” a WD Live, does it look like the pictures at the top of this forum?  If not, you’re in the wrong forum.
