Changing to NTSC when unit crash

When the unit (WD TV Live Gen 3 with latest firmware (1.06.04)) for whatever reason descides to crash, it switches TV mode to NTSC (or whatever strange mode it is). Same thing happened when I installed the new firmware, effectively bricking the unit.

By ripping out the cord, pressing the reset switch for 10+ seconds, ripping out the cord again, sending a prayer to the allmighty I’ve managed to get the machine back on track (this has happened at least 3 times).

My telly says “Unsupported video format”.

But this seems to be quite a big bug, especially as the remote doesn’t have a button to toggle between modes.

Most modern TV’s accept NTSC / PAL. On my PAL set it just removes the colour. How are you connecting the player to your TV.

I’m using a HDMI cable (directly to the telly), not much else to chose from…

I have a 1 yr old Philips Telly (not the cheapest one)…

Even if it would show the UI without colours it would be unacceptable, why would it switch to NTSC in the first place?

I asume you’ve seen this problem as well then?

PAL / NTSC is only relevant with Composite Video or Component Video connections.

HDMI doesn’t use PAL or NTSC either way …  the modes are independent.

So is your WD switching to COMPOSITE(NTSC) for the Video Mode?

As Tony had said if you are using HDMI it does not matter what standard the player is set to as the NTSC / PAL thing does not apply.

I know that PAL/NTSC doesn’t apply to HDMI!

But the manual claims that the operation “hold down the reset button for 10s” switches between PAL/NTSC.

There is no other video connector than HDMI, so it must be relevant in some way to that output.

And I do get the unit back on track after performing one of these resets, so it does something with the video signal…

A friend of mine borrowed my device, the entire UI went green on one of his telly’s, so there is something messed up with the output of the unit.

Every time I’ve updated the firmware the unit becomes a brick untill I’ve performed a 10s  reset.

Uhm, sure there is.  The Live also has COMPOSITE video output…  THAT’s why there is a PAL / NTSC setting.
