I just got a WD Play…have it set up and working good with my windows 7 pc.
I can’t figure out out access my movies/tv on my pc hard drive(s). Play guide talks about using a NAS or dlna server. I don’t have a NAS…I need to sream from the PC obviously and have no clue how. Embarassing…very embarassing.
I run a DLNA server to stream with the WDTV Play. I use Plex but there are others like Serviio and PS3 Media Server that do the same. Just download and install one of them on the computer with your files and then point them at your library.
His Win 7 PC has a server – it;s called Windows Media Player. To serve media to the TV Play (or other WD players) the “Play To” feature of Windows 7 and WMP needs to be used. All explained in the Windows Help.
I had the same problem. Go to Start----help and support…then type in “play to” (without the quote marks). It will pull up directions to use MS Media Player, how to turn on streaming in windoze, and pretty much anything else you might need to get it working. Not that hard. No third party software needed. Make sure you “allow the remote” for the WD box or you have to run back and forth to the PC to control the thing.
I found that you didn’t have to leave Media Player on once you get it working, I guess windoze just allows you to share the libraries found on it. Oh, and if your hard drive goes to sleep the WD box will stop working…so you might want to change that!!
Good luck! I like this little box so far. I got it just to be able to use the usb stick for movies instead of burning dvd’s & now I find I don’t even have to do that.
Stay away from a windows program called “PlayOn”. Its a server, a good one, but the Play can’t play anything from it. All other WD devices work great with it.
I use the Ps3 media server…however I just updated to the newest version and it doesnt seem to work very well with THE PLAY…so I went back to previous version which was from November… which works wonderfully…The ps3 media server is constantly updated… sometimes it takes a bit to work bugs out of newest versions… heres a link to the November version…
