Copying Data from myCloudEX4 to MyCloudEX2Ultra

Hope I’m in the correct category to post. I’m working to migrate my data from EX4 to the replacement EX2 Ultra.

First, I am an Apple Powerbook user and the OS is up to date. It’s Monterey 12.3.1.

Now, as I try to copy the data from the EX4 to the EX2 Ultra, I’m getting an error that states: You can’t copy the item “.wdmc” because its name is too long or includes characters that are invalid on the destination volume with an OK button. I click the OK button and the message clears the screen and the migration process seems to terminate.

I’ve gone to the Finder and searched for .wdmc on the EX4 and don’t find a file or files.

I did create my own folder on the EX4 that I am trying to move. With support not accessible on the weekends, I’m hoping someone has run into this challenge and can help me resolve it so I can complete this task this weekend.

Thank you.

Hi @sjbair,

Have you opened a Support Case? If not opened, for more information, please contact the WD Technical Support team for the best assistance and troubleshooting:

Not a MAC expert. . .but. . . .

could the path length (including the file name) be exceeding 256 characters?

The .wdmc extension is part of the indexing/thumbnailing functions for media on the drive. These files will appear after indexing (either for twonky or some of the other WD apps)

When looking for the files. . . make sure you are looking for “system” or “hidden” files. . .these might not show up otherwise.

When copying stuff over. . . .try copying in smaller chunks to (1) Make progress and (2) identify where the problem actually is.
