Folder images

Hi all, just got my wdtv set up and working well. the layout is almost there with a few exceptions.

I am using alaska as my theme (as recommended on these forums- thanks!) and it is nice and clean. However, I use folder view to seperate my movies and TV shows, and the image for movies folder is the first film in the folder and the tv shows is a generic icon. I have tried dropping a folder.jpg file in the folder but its not showing… what am I doing wrong?!

If there are any METATHUMB files in the folder, rename them to JPG.

Example:

Star Wars.metathumb   →  Star Wars.jpg

Only then will “folder.jpg” files work.

thanks for the reply, there arent any files of that type in the folder. I did manage to get the tv folder to work with folder.jpg, however I now cant change the image. i have cleared and rebuilt the library several times to try and fix this. does this mean there is an xml file somwhere pointing to the wrong image?

Dear Messo,

Im probably not the right person to ask, but i opened the folder on my wd elements hard drive and placed the folder.jpg in the movie folder, this method worked for the tv folder, but not the movie one at the moment.

Is your SMP version 1.07.15?

it has the latest firware yes

I have metathumb files and a folder jpg in my MOVIE folder and it works, I make sure my “folder.jpg” is the same size as the metathumb files.

all of the metathumb files in my movies folder are different sizes. what size do you make your folder.jpg to work?

I am haveing no luck getting the SMP to recognize the folder jpg if there are ANY metathumbs in the folder with it.

I’m pretty confused, having the same problem. WD has been automatically grabbing everything very well, I just want to get rid of the folder image being the first file in that folder. There are tons of .metathumb files in the folder.

My folder.jpg is 185 pixels wide x 278 pixels high and about 29 kb’s and it is in the same folder as the metathumbs for my movies.

All my movies are in the same folder and all my metathumbs are the same size (185 x 278 and about 29kb’s).

All my folder.jpg’s work fine, firmware version 1.04.12.

Cheers

AAHHH yes Ritaben, firmware 1.04.12 handles folder.jpg’s beautifully. any firmware newer it does not.

Thanks for the info on sizes though.

Ah, so what are we supposed to do to fix this in the newer firmwares? I updated mine when it first turned on, but it looks silly with the current view.

Some are having luck with renaming the folder.jpg to “1.metathumb” , but it hasnt worked for me so i went back to 1.04.12

Hey thanks, I’ll give that a try. My one folder is actually showing an old metathumb that isn’t even there anymore.

Thanks, 1.metathumb did work for me, but I had to rename the folder to something new or else it was using some old cached image that wasn’t even in that directory anymore for some reason.

Delete the wd.tv folder and sub folders completely, then clear media library. It is probably using the metathumbs in the thumbs folder for that old image.

Cheers

Thanks I was thinking about that, but unsure. I’ll defintitely do that now though.

I resized the folder image and done a factory reset (not ideal i know) and it worked. thanks for all the suggestions!

all set up now, except one thing I would like to change, when I access the my media library on the attached usb the hdd is named ‘media’ and this is the first folder option that comes up. Ideally I would like to click videos, then have my Movies and TV folders displayed (with there painstaking thumbnails;) basically I want to miss the top folder, is this possible? I tried the filter views, but then all my movies and tv shows are mixed together.

thanks

There is a way because mine was set up that way at one point… I can’t remember how to turn it back though. I think you need to have the ‘media center’ option turned off and just pick local storage the first time you go into the videos section. Unfortunatley this then disables the dashboard… hopefully somebody else has a better way they can post.
