Frequent Connectivity Issues with Plex. Who is to blame?

I have a MyCloud Mirror Gen 2 loaded up with movies and TV show which I often stream to a Roku, iPad, or Chromecast. By and large, this device with their plugin works great. But I experience an issue that I haven’t seemed to find support for on Plex’s forums or Reddit.

I can be at home, work, or a friend’s and try to log onto Plex only to find that the libraries on my MyCloud are not available. I can log into the drive from the wdmycloudmirror/ dashboard or I can see the drive on Windows Explorer, but Plex has some kind of disconnect.

Recently, someone suggested that I turn off the Drive Sleep feature in order to keep it connected. I did this, but I still experience the same issue.

The only thing that I can consider to be a potential culprit has to do with my router. I have Optimum Online in NJ, and we have the router provided by the ISP. It has proprietary firmware, although I have managed to set up the Port Forwarding properly. I saw a user on Reddit complain that the DNS settings from Optimum gave them trouble, but I’m not savvy enough to understand what effect that had and if it applies to my situation.

Any help or direction anyone can provide would be immensely appreciated. Is this a WD issue or Plex?

Hello,

There are a lot of users here that have experience with Plex. Lets see if they can share some experience with us.

What device is hosting Plex on your equipment? I have a high-end WD NAS on which the Plex server is installed and it works fine for me at home. I do not access Plex remotely since I have better and less expensive ways for remotely accessing my media.

As far as I know the MC Mirror does not have the horsepower to host Plex; only the heftiest WD NAS units do.

Hey guys,

Thanks so much for responding.I have managed to resolve the issue. A user on the Plex Forums connected with me and looked over all of my settings from the router, to the WD, to my Plex settings. Turns out that I had multiple devices set to port forward to the same port and they all must have been knocking each other off. He walked me through giving each device its own independent port and so far (less than an hour since it’s been done), I have not experienced the same issue.

I appreciate you both reaching out though. Good to know there are helpful people out there willing to lend a hand.
