What happens after the 10sec blank screen or do you mean that you get a WD logo for 10secs and then a blank screen forever?

One thing you should know is that if you hold the reset button down for 10 seconds, it will switch between NTSC and PAL on the composite output. So you can try holding down the reset button for at least 10s, and then see if your TV will sync to it. Try this a couple of times so that you are sure that the WD box has switched to both NTSC and PAL. (If you hold down the reset button for less than 10s it will just reset without switching NTSC/PAL).

Also, make sure that the composite cable is plugged all the way into the WD box. It takes a while for the WD to boot up, so wait at least a couple of minutes before giving up. If you still can’t see anything on the composite output you probably have a bad box.

I’m getting the same thing…did you get this resolved?

When I first plug it in the WD logo appears for 3-5 seconds and then the screen goes black and my TV says “No Signal”.  I tried pressing and holding the reset button but to no avail.  I just got this box today, but it is a refurbished model.  Any help?

It would help to know what firmware is installed on it, but you’ll have to be able to see it.

Use the included COMPOSITE cable and plug it in that way;  you should be able to see the menus and then go change the HDMI settings from there.

Thanks for the response.

I’ve tried every output (HDMI, component, composite) and get the same result every time, so I can’t get to any menus, even when using composite.  The only thing I can see from the box is what I assume is the boot screen, where it has the WD logo and says “WD TV Live HD Media Player” under that.

I just sent this fully-detailed description to WD support:

"I just received my “refurbished” WD TV Live HD Media Player yesterday.  When I plug it in, the WD logo appears on the screen for about 5-10 seconds and then the screen goes black and my tv says “No Signal”.  I’ve tried this using an HDMI cable, and both the component and composite cables included with the product.  The WD logo appears each time, so I can tell the cords are connected correctly, but the screen goes to black after the logo each time.

I’ve tried pressing the reset button on the side, which did nothing.  The device stayed on and there was no change on my TV screen.  I then held the reset button for 10+ seconds, after reading online that that switches from NTSC to PAL.  No luck there.  I’ve tried to reset and the NTSC/PAL switch multiple times on each output.

I’ve also unplugged the device for 5+ minutes inbetween switching output formats.  No luck there either.

Is my “refurbished” device just faulty? Help please?"

It sounds like it…    The COMPOSITE interface is pretty much fail-safe;   If IT is dead, then no one is home…

I do have to ask how long you’re waiting at the “no signal”.

Because my Live, fresh out of the box, will come up with the WD Logo screen, and then the video shuts off again.  After that the video does turn on and off several times before the main menu screen finally comes up.

So, if you’re giving up the second you get the “no signal”, then I’d suggest waiting it out a bit longer.

If you’re waiting several minutes, then ya, this seems to be something deeper.

I should add that the on-off-on-off-on-off-on… that I’m getting as it’s initializing is over composite.

Well what I find so strange and frustrating is that the logo appears before the No Signal black screen.  Wouldn’t the screen just be all blank if the output was dead?  It makes me think it’s a video setting or something I’m doing incorrectly.

Ya I’ve definitely waited a few minutes after the No Signal and nothing changes.

It is probably faulty (there’s a good reason it was “refurbished” in the first place) but just to make sure, you don’t have anything attached to it, do you?  No USB disk drives, no Wi-fi adapters, nothing but the composite cable to your TV and the power cord, right?  (Only because any of those other things could be causing issues as well).

No, nothing else is plugged in.  When I first tried to set it up yesterday I had 2 USB drives and an ethernet cord to my wireless router plugged in.  But today, to troubleshoot, I unplugged everything except the composite cable and the power cord.

Yeah, I thought as much.

Hopefully you can stil return it (as a very general rule I *never* buy anything refurbished – unless it’s a fraction of the cost of a new unit – 10 percent or less – it’s never a good investment).

Just got this same media player refurbished. It also just goes to boot logo, and then cuts off to no signal. Tried everything from resetting it  to pulling out power plug, no luck.

Have you looked into returning it? I think I am going to do so.

@gbstylez87: If you’re using HDMI right now, try the COMPOSITE cable connection.  That should at least get you to the menu.

Hi

Actually at first WD boots up at  a default resolution.So any visual device can project the WD Logo .During this time it detects the audio visual attributes of the TV . Then it automatically reboots and tries to set at the  best audio visual levels of the TV. This time you get the picture and sound.

Probably for you it is unable to suit itself with the TV.Since at least you could get some picture out of it means the circuits are OK.There is handshaking problem. Better go for replacement if possible.

@TonyPh12345

I tried the Composite Cable, HDMI, and Component cable. They all do the same thing, boot up logo then blank screen(no signal).

@Sanudigit

I tried it on a  Sony Bravia HDTV and VIZIO HDTV. All same results.

Read my post about buying refurbished units (trust me, in my long life I’ve learned that this is ALWAYS a bad idea.  Buying something refurbished you need to go in with the expectation you are basically buying a lottery ticket.  Don’t pay any more than you can easily afford to lose – if it happens to work, you win, but most of the time you have just wasted your money).
