<Guide> EX2 and OpenVPN

Hi guys,
I thought I’d spare you the misery and headache for trying to access your precious files over the internet via WD My Cloud app.
Most of us spent hours trying to make it work with their “easy” WD software, but either it is Portforwarding or Relay, it just doesn’t work.

So being one of those guys that spent hours and asking "Why, WD, why doesn;t it work like it supposed to ? ", i gave up on WD ways and went to the Big Boys Corner: VPN

I have a router that is capable of VPN Asus RT-AC68U so here are the configurations step by step

  1. Log on to the router’s interface > Advanced Settings> VPN> select OpenVPN> Enable VPN to ON
  2. create users for OpenVPN
  3. Connect to Open VPN with your device:
        3.1 for Windows : http://www.asus.com/support/Knowledge-Detail/11/2/RTAC68U/1A935B95-C237-4281-AE86-C824737D11F9/
        3.2 for MAC : http://www.asus.com/support/Knowledge-Detail/11/2/RTAC68U/C77ADCBF-F5C4-46B4-8A0D-B64F09AB881F/
         3.3 for Iphone/Ipad : http://www.asus.com/support/Knowledge-Detail/11/2/RTAC68U/37EC8F08-3F50-4F82-807E-6D2DCFE5146A/
         3.4 for Android : http://www.asus.com/support/Knowledge-Detail/11/2/RTAC68U/8DCA7DA6-E5A0-40C2-8AED-B9361E89C844/
  4. For Windows go to Start> My Computer> in the address bar type \IP_of_NAS (ex: \192.168.1.5)

and there you go. just like accessing from your own network. But that’s not it, since now you have VPN, you can access every device like you are at home: Remote desktop to PC’s, shares from computers, even Vpshere client for your ESX machines…and now also the WD My Cloud App works, because it thinks it’;s in the same network as the EX2.

For smartphones, i recommand that after you connect with OpenVPN, you use the App ES File Explorer and you can access all the files in your network, including EX2.

Even if you do not have an Asus router, if your router is capable of OpenVPN, the steps should be the same.

Hi there,

Thank you very much for the guide, hopefully this might help other users set this up on their devices.

Hi, I have exactly the same router and also EX2, and I use the same setup. As a next step, I’d like to install the EX2 at my parents and run OpenVPN client on it connecting to my home router, enabling remote backup over VPN.

Our company is attempting to setup a remote backup from the office to my home to create a redundant set of backup data in case of catastrophe. Both the office and home use a Nighthawk V7000 router and MyCloudEX2.
I discovered that my home IPS (Verizon) does not allow static IP in our building. Then I came across the above topic and thought an OpenVPN solution would fit the need. Well, I have successfully been able to connect OpenVPN to see the office EX2 at home, but cannot see the home EX2 from work.

I’ve tried a multitude on port forwarding, IP addresses, etc., but to no avail. Thoughts?
