My WD TV Live came yesterday along with HDMI 1.3c cable. I first connected it with composite cable and then tried to shift the output to HDMI, but nothing came on my Sony Bravia LCD. Even switching to HDMI output close down composite connection, but when I unplug HDMI cable from the unit, composite automatically starts functioning. Do I have to unplug composite cable from the unit after selecting HDMI output?
I also tried to play some of my downloaded .avi and .mkv files and they just played fine though not good resolution on composite cable.
When you switch to HDMI try setting the resolution manually (instead of just selecting “auto”) – you may need to try a couple of different settings unless you are sure what inputs your Sony TV will resolve to (I’d start with 1080p 60hz).
Thanks. HDMI is now working fine. You were right there was a issue of my TV setting (HDMI ports were off in default).
Please also guide if I should upgrade the box to latest firmware or not? (my box is showing a firmware of 1.0.21 which I could not found any where on WD site).
Also tell me which chipsets of wireless cards are supported by WD TV LIVE?
I have upgraded my Live boxes to the latest firmware – if for some reason it does something you don’t like you can always downgrade if you need to (you can find the older firmware on other sites).
Many thanks. All my equipment is now working perfectly OK. Upgraded to latest Firmware and wirelessly connected to my network using D-Link wireless adapter (DWA-125 Wireless Version A1: with FW 1.00) with D-Link Router DIR-300.
Absoulutely flawless streaming of YouTube videos over 2MB DSL.
The only problem I face while watching downloaded videos is to jump to a specific location/time. WD only allows 16x fast forward. Is there any way through which I can fast forward a moview more faster?
Thanks; I will try it in the evening. Two more questions, how can I delete my Youtube search history? Plus how to share my movies folder with WD on Laptop (Windows 7)?
On your Win 7 machine right click the folder you want to share and share it. Turn off password and add “everyone” to the share (advanced sharing properties). Make sure the workgroup name is “WORKGROUP”. On the Live, when the Win 7 machine is booted up, go to Video, Net Share, wait a minute or two (you may have to back out and try again) and then you’ll see the shares.

‘reset to factory defaults’ (via internal menu) should remove your Youtube search history.
well i have a same problem, it works fime with composite but no HDMI, tv HDMI are turned on, when i connect different devices it works fine so no cable issues either, tried setting HDMI manually on every possible resolution no luck!!!
I too have the problem that my German-Technisat TV suddenly after several months via HDMI no image displays of Media Player "WDHDlive.
My complaint was acknowledged by the manufacturer immediately and strangely enough I got by RMA also immediately sent a new device. They seem to know the error and then to accept it as a failure of the media player.
This new device can even impossible the same mistakes because it was so produced with safety on a day other than the first device. So I thought.
But after two days could not be used with this unit’s HDMI port, without anything that I had changed to hardware or software.
The HDMI cable is the same TV and access are the same, firmware on the TV set was not changed, and on the Media Player was still the original - 1:02:21.
Have then implanted 1:03:22 - without result!
I skipped the 1:03:35 and 1:03:38, the same - again without result!
On TV you can see that there must be communication, because there appears to have come from the Media Player format that handle the TV can not. The TV shows at any rate, as in a scan of the craziest formats.
First of all, make sure you try another HDMI cable, preferably one that is made to HDMI 1.4 specifications (here in the U.S. I’d recommend you go to somewhere like Best Buy and get a hgih-end cable that you can return for a full refund after the experiment).
Next, make sure you don’t have “auto” selected in your HDMI settings. Set it for whatever the highest resolution your TV can accept (you will need to hook up the composite and/or component cable to do this so you can see what you are doing).
Let us know after you have tried both of these things.
“First of all, make sure you try another HDMI cable, preferably one that is made to HDMI 1.4 specifications.”
Why is “HDMI 1.4”?
Why not “HDMI 1.3”, Western Digital has, in its user information but just suggesting this specification?
“HDMI 1.4” there are only since 2009, so I assumed that this media player could find at the possibilities and requirements of “HDMI 1.4” in the development not be considered.
“Next, make sure you do not have” auto "selected in your HDMI settings. Set it for whatever the highest resolution your TV can accept (you will need to hook up the composite and / or component cable to do this so you can see what you are doing). "
OK, but when I connect the media player via Component only be accepted in the settings or “HDMI” or “720p 50Hz”, it is automatically reset to “composite NTSC” which of course is utter nonsense.
Only when I explicitly “Component” and 720p 50Hz "text box that accepts the media player this setting.
“Let us know after you have tried both of these things.”
With pleasure, if you agree with my Google-Translator-English are.
Try an HDMI 1.4 compliant cable because you know then it’s the best it can be – while not necessary for the Live, it will eliminate a cable issue as a problem.
If you connect via composite can you then not select HDMI and then some other resolution other than “Auto”?
OK, I have triggered the appointment of an “HDMI 1.4” cable.
Let’s see what comes of it.
“If you connect via composite can you then not select HDMI and then some other resolution other than “Auto”?”
No, it is as I have already described.
When I connect the media player via composite or component with the TV, then I can select HDMI and the 720p resolution, but it appears the following error:
_ The connected TV does not support the resolution. Do you want to let the WD pick the best match automatically?_
The error message is incorrect because it is a “HD-Ready” device is to perform at what a media player and a BlueRay player other manufacturers easily serve in 720p.
If I stop, the media player remains on “Component (720p)”.
If I accept that the best setting composite (NTSC) indicated.
“Composite (NTSC)” is of course nonsense, since the media player is not connected via composite and the TV is not NTSC capable.
Am I really the only one who has to live with this error now in two devices. Has no one, not even with WD, a solution or an explanation?
“Try an Error” can surely not for the development departments of a company such a world be the professional way.
HDMI is a little tricky, particularly in “auto” mode because it relies upon handshaking by the other device and the other device may not be doing it properly. IOW, WD can’t possibly test all the different displays out there and there are some that do not report things correctly and the Live does not ignore than information.
But when you connect via composite or component I also mean for you to have the HDMI cable attached at the same time, so hopefully that’s what you are doing (because you can’t select an HDMI resolution unless there is a cable hooked up at the same time). If you are doing this and it still isn’t working then it’s quite possible a new cable will resolve this issue.
If it IS a cable problem again that’s not something WD can guard against.
Sorry, but these suggestions have not helped me in two HDTVlive.
The players have to work until my Technisat HD Vision 32 and then suddenly, without firmware change any more. I have tried other HDMI cables 1.3 and tested on mkelley’s proposal also cable HDMI 1.4. This has all helped.
I’ve done TV and player one days normally, has not helped and also the cutting of 2 mm insulation has brought nothing, if the plug does not extend far enough into the player.
The handshaking between Media Player and some types of TVs will not work or it works without an apparent reason not working after a certain time.
The manufacturer Western Digital should finally result in a list and make known, in which the devices are listed, to which the media player is not kompatiel.
A list could be safely initiated on this and other forums.
The manufacturer could also try to explore why and how it comes to this error. He should be the one guaranteed to be either the device compatibility, or to inform customers about the restrictions.
The fault can not be sought at the TV producers, because with my device and my cable handshaking works so far with all other connected devices.
WD are looking at the HDMI issue thats why there have been a number of betas and no official firmware for some time. They are having a big problem with HDMI and certain TV receivers and they are attempting to work it out.
