Head parking issue: which drive in a Windows 8 mediaserver

My mediaserver (Windows 8) is running out of storage space so I am looking for a new 3TB or 4TB harddrive. I had a preference for a WD drive but I am having second thoughts when I read about problems with head parking with both WD Red and Green drives.

As I understood a WD Green/Red drive is head parked after 8 seconds. That seems useful when used in a desktop pc but my pc is mainly a fileserver that is on during the day and only standby during the night.  I noticed there is a tool to change the setting on WD Red drives as they are made to function in a NAS. But Red drives have the TLER function which is perfect for a RAID envirement but not so good for a non-RAID pc as it disables the reading of bad sectors after 7 seconds.

My question: is the head parking setting still standard on WD Red and Green drives?  Which drive should I use in my server then? To get rid of the setting I don’t want to use third party tools  that WD does not support.

Hello,

There is a WD software called:  WD Red SMART load/Unload utility.

This utility modifies the behavior of the drive to wait longer before positioning the heads in their park position and turning off unnecessary electronics. This utility is designed to upgrade the following hard drives: WD RED

But as I understand the RED series has a TLER setting which isn’t preferable if you have a NAS or server without RAID?
