i have the WDTV Live Hub and running out of space on the 1TB so rather then buying another device i am thinking of buying a External Hard Drive and storing files on there.
A few questions
1.does the Hub support USB 3.0?
2.can i play movie files from the External hard drive from the Hub?
3.What is the best hard drive i am thinking either Seagate or WD?
4.There is Network Hard Drives, can the WDTV Live Hub see the Network Hard Drive if i had one or is it best just to get a External Hard Drive?
This are the ex hard drive i am thinking of getting. Can i upgrade to a 3TB External Hard Drive? Read somewhere that it wasn’t supported but maybe it was a old post.
The “best drive” is one from a major company that gives you the best bang for the buck, meaning amount of GB and features, and physical size for what you want to pay.
The ones you gave links to are 3.5 inch drives, and if space is not a problem, they will do. The portable drives are 2.5 inch drives, so take up less space. They get their power from the WD player. There should be enough power for one of them. They also cost twice as much as a 3.5" drive.
All new drives today are USB 3.0, but they are backward compatible to USB 2 which the WD players are.
Yes, you can play movies from the new drive that is attached to the player. Forget about a network drive for now. If you haven’t set up a network, it could be a problem for you. Drives work with the WD best when connected directly to them.
I also like drives that go into idle/sleep if not in use and the WD Elements you suggested has that feature. I suggest you just get that one and be done with your search. I would not get a 3TB size drive, as the WD may not be compatible with drives larger than 2TB. Make sure you don’t get a “mac” version drive as the one someone suggested to you. They cost more, and you would just be wasting a mac drive on a WD player. The non-mac versions are what you need.
I have my hub setup using thumbgen displaying movie sheets with the files on the external drive I won’t be able to do that right? Thanks again
Yes, you can use movie sheets for videos on external drives. Treat them the same way you always have just putting the correct files in the directories that hold your movies.

Thanks so much for the reply so the wd elements is the one I was thinking about but wanted to get the 3tb for more space as I have a lot of HD movies.
HUB owners: can a Hub accept an external drive larger than 2TB?
ive read someone has a 3TB External Hard Drive hooked up to there HUB. I am going to buy a 2 and 3TB and when i get them i will test myself and report back. If the 3TB doesn’t work then i can always just use it for more storage and backup.
There is no difference between the WD External Hard Drives Desktop drives and Portable drives?
The Desktop drive are My Elements and My Book
and the Portable drives are My Elements and My Passport
I have been using 2 4yb drives in startech docks for months now with no problem. I had one of the 4tb’s filled to about 100mb left, at one point. They are mixed in with other 2tb drives, some in docks, some in 4 bay media enclosures and some are fantom external hdd. I run 3 wdlivehub’s with these drives. I also herd it would not work, maybe I just got lucky, but I also choose to take a chance and am glad I did.
