How to sync backups

I have a WD cloud drive which I use for backups.

I noticed that the backups do not sync. When I delete a file from my computer drive, I assume the backup copy would get deleted as well. As a result, my cloud drive is filling up with old files I do not want.

Is there a setting that tells WDmycloud to sync files and delete backups as I delete the main files. A time delay would be fine.

Thanks

What software on the computer are you using to perform the backup to the WD My Cloud?

WD Smartware … came with the drive (via download from WD’s site)

The WD Smartware software does not “sync”, rather it simply backs up selected content from your PC to the WD My Cloud. It does not remove the file(s) on the WD My Cloud that have been deleted on the PC.

For more information on how WD Smartware operates see the WD Smartware User Manual.

Thanks - that’s what I needed to know.

Can you recommend software that will backup and “sync”. Accumulating files is not what I need to be doing - it’s filling up my drive needlesly.

There are many paid backup programs and possibly some free ones that will “sync” content to an external NAS/drive. You can also use the search option at the top of the page to search for many other threads on this support forum that discuss syncing to the My Cloud and ways people have done so both locally and remotely.

The Smartware software does have an option to limit how many backup versions of each file it keeps. See the User Manual link I provided above and see Chapter 8 Managing and Customizing the Software, specifically the section called “Specifying the Number of Backup Versions”. If I remember right the default number of backup versions is 5.
