Today I tried to play numerous video files (avi and mkv) through my Hub as I did always and the Hub didn’t play those anymore. I’m in the last firmware and I am using two WD My Book external hard disks (1TB and 2TB) to store and play my files. The two external disks are connected to the rear USB port through a USB hub from DLink.
I press PLAY or OK from my remote to play the file and a black screen appears (and instantly the name of the video file and the progress bar) and next appears the cycling arrow and nothing else happens. After that I can go back to media library or the start menu but I can’t play any video file. I didn’t try to play music or audio files. Is it reversible or should I ask for an RMA?
Hi. I am having the exact same issue. I have the WD Media Hub, so my files are on the player’s built in hard drive. I have been adding a lot of files lately (setting up all my video & audio files on the hub). I’ve had the player for 2-3 months and everything has always played no problem. All of a sudden nothing will play, (Audio or Video), it just stalls out on the orange spinning arrow doughnut.
I read that MKV files cause problems, but i don’t think that is what i tried to play… (Although i do know i was trying to play and .asf and some other formats like Divx and ??
I haven’t tried rebooting yet, although i’ve truned the box off with the remote repeatedly. I will now try rebooting, but am interested to hear advice on if this is common and how to properly reboot the system.

Not sure why you think that .mkv files casue problems. I have a good ammount of then and have been slowly converting a lot of my ISO files to MKV without issue at all. So far I have found those to be file container I have had the best sucess with.
The whole system was working quite well for a few weeks now. No new firmware upgrade or system configuration change did this. The whole matter came up suddenly.
Connect them to your PC and see if there are errors on the disk. (Your PC should alert you as soon as you connect the HD if there are problems.) If so, allow the PC to correct the errors.
Safely Remove the HDs from the PC, and plug them back into the WD.
Make sure your video output has not defaulted back to standard def. This is a continuing issue with these devices. I have had mine for almost 2 years now and play MKV files almost exclusively with no issues other than having the display output regularly revert back to default settings.
Well I found a kind of solution. I turned it to factory defaults and connected the hard disks directly to the USB ports of the Hub. This way it started playing the media files again. I tried also to reconnect the USB hub and put back the disks on it but I had the primary effect of not playing the files. I noticed also that after that I had to return again to factory defaults for playing files directly from the ports of the LiveHUB. What can I say? God wills…
PS I 'll try to connect a compatible Belkin USB hub to test if it does it also with the specific USB hub. If someone has experience of the Belkin USB hub functionality, pls let me know.
Yes, your suggestion was right. But I had to reset Live to factory defaults first… I don’t have a Belkin USB hub, I’m going to buy one just for trying it with Live. That’s why I’m asking if there is anybody who tried it in order not to buy something useless. Any opinion is acceptable.
I already ordered the Belkin F5U403-BLK. I 'll have it in the next three days. In the link below can someone find the compatibility list of the tested devices that will work with WD Live Hub. Alas, the USB hubs tested are only two.
Sure, ordering and paying for a new Belkin F5U403-BLK which is listed as a “compatible device with Latest Firmware” on Western Digital Support Forum is reasonable enough… i guess
But, What the ! … only 2 Tested Hubs on Latest “Cutting Edge Firmware” *cough*
Personally, i would have tried Rolling Back to a Previous Firmware Revision (unless there was some critical Must-Have Feature in Latest Firmware) and test your Dlink again before shelling out more money,
Anyways, it’s your money … Hope everything all works for you.
