I can't stand changing the audio output every time :(

On audio/video system settings, I can see the 03 options bellow about audio output :

  • Stereo
  • Digital only  through optical cable
  • Digital only through HDMI

My wdtv is connected to receiver through optical cable. The problem is that if i set “Digital only  through optical cable”, the movies/show  with digital sound (dd5.1, dts) works good, but i have no sound in stereo sources, as youtube for example.

On the other hand, If i set “stereo”, the stereo sources works good but i have no sound in digital sources (dd5.1 /dts)

As result, i have to change the audio output every time.

Is there any solution for this problem ? Im using the last official firmware.

Ty all e sorry about my english.

It sounds like you don’t have the optical input set right in the receiver.  Depending on your receiver, it usually has a PCM, digitial, auto etc setting.

The auto or PCM/digital setting will allow both the stereo + 5.1 through.  My guess is you have it set to digital, and that prevents the 2 channel audio which would normally come out PCM.

That´s right, my receiver has the 3 options, PCM, digital and auto, but i always set auto, so it was supposed to work, it has been worked for years until the problem appears.

And, if the problem was the receiver set to digital, shouldnt work even when i set the wdtv output to Stereo, right ? But when i set wdtv to stereo, the sound automatically works without any change in receiver.

Making statements like “it has been worked for years until the problem appears” is an irrational statement. There are variations within the specifications of all consumer equipment and video source recording.

Too many people compare computer video to professional digital video standards. The video is generated differently and in a lot of cases, computer video is not compatible with the streaming box professional digital video standards video hardware chip.

Youtube is an internet computer video standard not a professional digital video standard. Professional digital video standards video will automatically switch between stereo and 5.1 audio source and if a good quality digital to analogue decoder is used, it will decode 5.1 audio from the stereo audio.

The WDTV live is manufactured compliant to the professional digital video standards not computer video standards. You will have to compare the Youtube audio specifications, the official WDTV live specifications and your amplifier’s digital to analogue decoder specifications to ascertain inter-compatibility.

thepanoguy,

Forget about youtube pls.

The problem occurs with any source with PCM audio.

It´s simple, i have only one connection between wdtv and my receiver , a optical cable.

I CAN send the audio to receiver, pcm or dd.5. or dts.

BUT, if the source is PCM i have to set “stereo” in wdtv settings and if the source is DD/DTS i have to set “digital through optcal cable only” in wdtv settings.

Its boring changing the option every time, accordingly the source.

In the past, this procedure was not necessary, even using the exactly same sources/files/movies that im using today.

Hmm… that is odd.  I’d try doing the “factory defaults” on the WD and set it up again.

Maybe something got messed up in it’s configuration.

From my experience, if the source was stereo, I needed the receiver in PCM or auto mode to get an output.  If it was 5.1 digital then auto or digital.  So I use auto to le it take are of it.

Exactly Wires, i´ve always used the receive in “auto” for this reason.

Hmmm… seems I have the same issue.  I was using HDMI which was fine, then recently switched to optical so I can pass it through the house on zone 2.

Netflix plays 2 channel audio fine, but Flingo, Youtube, etc has no audio on optical passthrough.  Only on stereo output.  Arggg… Now I feel your frustration.
