Impossibly Slow Backup on OS X Lion

Since updating to OS X Lion several months ago I have been unable to backup to My Book Live via Time Machine. I tried again last night. Soon after starting the Time Maching Backup read “backing up 917,000 items” and listed “about 5 seconds” as time remaining. This morning, 12 hours later, it is now “backing up 858,134 items” and still lists “about 5 seconds” remaining. At this rate it would take a week to finish the task.

Any ideas of how to fix this?

Twonky, iTunes, and WD2Go are all set to off. Both green lights are on on back of MyBook Live. Firmware is up to date.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

You may try copying files manually to the MBL, in order to the determine if the slowness is related to Time Machine or the drive itself.  You may also try resetting it, by pressing and holding its Reset button located on the back, next to the power port.

Thank you for your reply.

When I transfer files manually to/from MBL there is no speed issue.

Also, when I use Time Machine with a different external drive there is no speed issue.

I’m only having the issue when I try to use Time Machine with MBL.

What version of firmware does your MyBookLive have? When Lion was released Apple updated the program for Time Machine, and it does not  play friendly with the previous version.

If you have a MBLive that was produced prior to the release of Lion, chances are the firmware does not support Lion well.

Dashboard tells me “your firmware is up to date” and lists the version as MyBookLive 02.10.09-124 : Core F/W

I don’t know now… if I think of anything I will post it here.
