Jesus I feel like a virgin again :-/ Help a newbie

Morning all first post so pleaseee be gentle for some stupid questions.

I’m ok working my way round a PC and bits normally but I have never learnt anything about all this networking stuff, after all i have never had a need I have my beige (I know, but i like Beige) box sitting in the corner with all my hard drives in there, PC is then connected to my wireless router via ethernet cable and then laptops connect to router wirelessly but that is only used so the lappys can go online, never have i learnt how to share folders or drives between them, if something needs to go on the laptop i use a thumb or external hard drive.

Having just bought a new Sony KDL-46EX723 TV I thought it would be a smart idea to resort my bits out and given i watch a lot of stuff in avi/mkv format i thought i’d go for this player, now player is connected fine to my TV and i can get menu etc but after that it all gets a bit hit & miss in my case.

In an ideal world I’d like to have 2x2TB Smasung drives house in an IcyBox IB-RD4320StU3 set as RAID1 (mirroring i think it’s called) that way I will always have a back of my media collection (mainly tv shows & movies) but i know that will involve setting windows (I have Win7 U 64bit) to share and I have no idea how to do this, right now i have a simple external usb housing being plugged into my router and it works to a degree but not how i want things set up in an ideal world.

I see things like “media library enabled”, “Network Share Server”, “Proxy”,  “Local Storage”, Media Server", Network Share" etc and to be honest i’m lost, I also thought it would search my drive and update via some kind of metadata (think that’s what it called) but i can’t seem to get it going, is there a real dummies guide to this thing?

Any help or advice is MORE then welcome, hopefully some of the answers i get will help some other newbies as well.

Hmm. perhaps you should take it back if you do not want to take the time and effort to understand networking enough to get the WD to work for you.

First of all, download the complete user manual for your unit and RTFM.  Check the FAQs at WD support.  Poke around in Win 7 Help to learn the basics of networking.  Get your various PCs to share folders, THEN , add the WD player to the nix.  You appear to have plenty of PC experience to “get this”.

I’m happy to learn about networking after all i’m going to have to do it sooner or later the way things are going, I have done so much reading about this it’s untrue, I have followed the link that Alucardx23gave me and followed those instructions but it’s still not working, in fact i done it twice as I took an image before i made any changes but still no go, i’m going to keep going with it until monday and if i cant get it working it will go back but don’t sole my problem to be honest as i do need some kind of media player and as a rule I do like WD stuff, he says using 2 x Samsung drives to store media.

Well plugged in simple 2.5 inch external hard drive into it and that went without too many issues, the main problem (mental block more like) I have getting my head round it working with my router/IcyBox/2x2TB drives/windows setings, can i ask a direct question.

Is it even possible to do what i want and that is to have my IcyBox in RAID 1 plugged into my computer via it’s USB socket, that way i can move files over nice and easy plus i will be safe and have a back up copy of all my media in case one drive dies, but then allow my SMP to see what is on that drive and play from it my SMP is connected via cable and PC is always on 24/7, also when i delete something from the drive (while working on the PC) will the SMP have to do a FULL rescan when i turn it on or will it just know and edit it’s info accordingly.

Sorry if I have not used the correct terminology but as I say i’m still very new to this stuff and i’m trying to learn but the problem is most people think you know stuff and on this subject i sure don’t.

Can anyone help pleaseeee.

I’m on the brink of taking it back just because i can’t get my head round this networking/sharing folder deal, I have played this youtube clip about 20 times and still nothing is working

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQstgQ4eJCM&feature=player_embedded

It’s ok if i use an external USB drive plugged into the SMP but i want to use drives within my PC (well my IcyBox connected to USB ports).

When i go to videos hit the red button to select sourse i’m given 4 options “local, media server, network Share and online service” of course when i have usb drive plugged into the SMP i use local storage and that’s fine but trying to get it to see the drives in my PC just will not happen all it does is show me my O2 router which is how the SMP is coonected to the internet, while typing this I have just had a brain storm should my SMP be plugged into my router or into the back of my PC I have an an Asus P5E3 Prem and here is a an image of the backend

http://www.phoronix.net/image.php?id=asus_p5e3_premium&image=asus_p5e3p_io_show

I know it may sound like a stupid question, but i’m trying to get it working but there is no point in having a car if you can’t drive.

We were all newbies at one stage so help if you can please…

You have your WD player connected to your router not your PC.

Do you use the wifi on the player or are you connected via ethernet cable.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Rich, oh well at least i got that right, Yes i am connected to the router via it’s ethernet cable, as i say I can get it working using an usb external hard drive, so i know MY problem is more then likely something to do with my windows settings, I am running Win 7 U 64bit (all patches done) and ESET Smart Security v5 both legal copies, I was wondering if my firewall was being an issue, but i know NOTHING about networking and sharing of folders or drives.

Well, the first thing you need to do is to see if you PC sees the SMP.

From your PC click on the Start Orb, then click on Network.  In the window that opens up see if it shows the WDTVLive, specifically look for it under Workgroup.   If it does then the SMP is part of your workgroup and things will be easier to setup from here.  If not then you’ll have to do some changes in your network settings.

Looks like i’ll have to amend some settings then as when i click on network all i see is my PC’s name which is “Home-Brew-PC”

All1

Ok, first see if you have joined a Homegroup.

Click the Start Orb, then click on Control Panel.  In the new widow find and click on Network and Sharing Center.

You should see a House icon and next to it, it should say:

Network

Home Network

And beside that it should say:

Access type: Internet

Homegroup: joined

Connections: Local Area Network

Network - Home Network = Yes it says Home Network

Access type: Internet = Yes it says Internet

Homegroup: joined = Yes it says Joined

Connections: Local Area Network = NO This come back as saying “Local Area Connection”

Sorry, that was a typing error on my part, that’s what it should be.

Now go to your SMP and turn it on, then press Setup on the remote.  Select Network Settings, then look to see if says:

DNLA media server:  ON

Network share server: ON

Workgroup:  WORKGROUP

If not, change.

Also, while your there, look at what it says next to Device name (this is what will appear on your PC under Network).

And select Network Setup and write down you IP address, then just press the Home button on your remote.

OK I’m in “Setup” then “Network Setup”

Network share server: ON = Is on

Workgroup:  WORKGROUP = Is set up as WORKGROUP

Device name is WDTVLive and i’ll leave it as that

Proxy is off

DNLA media server:  ON

I see no mention of DNLA anywhere

I have taken a note of my IP address, Subnet Mask, Gateway and DNS.

This is a wired setup NOT wireless just for your info, don’t think i have evey seen mention of DNLA while messing in it’s menus and it’s firmware is 1.06.04

Ok, yeah, I don’t think the SMP has DLNA media server.  I don’t have SMP, so I’m working from what is done on the HUB.  It’s pretty much the same, but there are a few minor differences.

Anyway, I was just covering the basics.  So try this, see if your SMP can see your PC.  From the Home menu select Videos, then press the Red button on the remote, then select Network Share.  See if you see your PC’s name.

If you don’t, then go back to your PC and click the Start Orb and in the search box type “cmd” (without the ") and press enter.  A command prompt will open up.  Then type in “ipconfig /all” (again without the ").

Check the Subnet Mask, Default Gateway and DNS of what was display with what you wrote down from the SMP, they should be the same.

You can also go ahead and see if you can connect to the SMP from your web browse.  In the address bar of your browse type in your ip address.  If the log on screen is displayed, the password is “admin”.

OK I get 4 choices “local storage” which i presume is USB drives plugged into the SMP, “Mdeia Server”, “Network Share” and Online Service" hitting Network Share gives me 2 options, which are “Windows Shares” & “Linux Shares”, well given i’m running 7 i went for “Windows Shares” and all it says is O2 which is the name of my router which is what the SMP is plugged into but at this stage i have no drives plugged into the routers USB socket as i’m trying to get main PC working with it, but i know if i plug in USB drive to my router it will see it and i can play files from it.

When i select O2 a big green tick on the right is highlighted then if i click on OK it askes me to login to the server, now the problem here is i changed the default login to something weird so weird i can’t remember the damm password, SO what i’ll do on monday is reset the rouetr back to factor setting then i can use defualt admin account to get in, but i never see my PC’s name just the name of the router.

Subnet Mask is the same as i find in my SMP

Default Gateway is the same as my SMP

DNS Servers is the same as in my SMP

I can login to my SMP via the web browser.

I’ll post back on Monday with some more news once i have reset the router plus i’ll give WD a bell and see what they have to say about it.

All1

Did you try using the default password and username when you saw the login page?

What router do you have?

I have the standard O2 V4 router which according to wiki is a rebadged Thomson SpeedTouch TG587nv2, i did try the default password and got kicked out saying username password is wrong, so i have reset router and all i get now when i select windows shares is the orange arrow chasing it’s own tail (bit like me right now), been on the phone to WD this AM and there stumped so it’s being passed up to 2nd line support, I would not mind but this is a fresh install of 7 and hardly anything has been touched.

All1

Well, first resting the router won’t do anything to rest the password on the SMP, you have to rest the SMP.

You can also try pinging your SMP.  Click on the Start orb, in the search box type in “cmd”, this will open the command prompt, then type: ping your-ip-address  (ex: ping 192.0.0.0), then you should get this:

Ping statistics for "your-ip-address:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

If you get that, then try turning off your firewall.  Click on the Start Orb, then on Control Panel, in the new window click on Windows Firewall, then on the left plane, click on Turn Windows Firewall on or off, then select the bubles to turn your firewall off.

Once you have done that, see if the SMP shows up under your network.  If is does you can turn your firewall back on, if it doesn’t , then try rebooting your PC.
