I lost all connection to my device. Swapped out Enet cables, swapped out ports. Tried soft reboot, tried hard reboot. Front light never changed from solid amber. Per WD, I tried connecting via Enet directly to my PC, no luck. Tried connecting USB to another WD Hard Drive I have, no luck. Data recovery to send it off would be a minimum of $400. I have a friend that does Computer Forensics with the Police and FBI. He opened it up, connected to the Sata (?) port and could see that the device is 6TB and it had 7 partitions. But even then, he is still having a hard time seeing files of any kind. I had connection about a week ago, sporadically. Tried to do a firmware update but it never could complete the download. Very dissappointing that we spend all of this money on WD and their products fail just after warranties expire.

Your friend needs to mount the largest partition using linux.

So I have the HD out of the device. I am using an iDsonix to plug into my PC. When it connects, it sees a number of drives and says they all need to be formatted. I did some digging, found a few recovery apps and one of them, it found data, sorted it by file type, etc. When I copied those files to a new location and tried to open them, even though they were .jpg and saved as .jpg, they would not open. Didn’t matter if it was jpg, mp4, avi, doc, etc., none would read. So in essence, my files are on the HD, the MyCloud device does not work. Is Linux the only way for me to access it? I am not a computer person, I can get around ok, just worried if I try to get Linux on my PC, something else may go wrong.

There are a few things to try:

  1. Recover the files using a linux livecd.
    Linux can see and use the file system on the disk natively, and can even attempt repairs on the file system if you really want to try that route-- personally, I would stick with ext4 file recovery tools to try and salvage the data from the damaged file system first without changing anything.

  2. If you INSIST on using windows— Get the diskinternals EXT4 file system package.
    Access to Ext 2/3/4, HFS and ReiserFS from Windows | DiskInternals
    It will probably have problems with a damaged file system though…

  3. Use windows version of TestDisk on it. It knows about EXT flavor file systems even though windows does not. It is better able to deal with broken file systems, but is a text based console program.
