Lost MKV files when upgraded to Twonky 5.1.4-1

Like several others here, I installed the latest update to my World Edition drive and now Twonky does not recognize my mkv files. It did with version 4, but now Twonky 5.1.4-1 does not list them.

  1. Is there a way to make this version recognize mkv files?

  2. Is there a way to roll back to my old version of Twonky?

  3. Does anyone with 5.1.4-1 have access to mkv files, or is it a universal problem with this version?

I have the same problem!!!

When I reported the problem to WD, I got the following answer:

Change your NAS, because WD will not help you, if you will read forum for last week, you can make your own opinion…

Please try something for those of you who moved up to FW 1.02.04 Firmware for My Book World Edition.

For those of you who cannot see the MKV files, please check the Shared Music folder under the Public shares to see if they are located there.

If so, move them back to Shared Video folders and they should appear from your Digital Media Player, e.g. streaming through xbox360, ps3, etc.

Sorry, let me clarify from my last post:

To play your MKV video, you will need to use your client to browse the server and pick ā€œmusicā€ instead of ā€œvideo."

We are looking into the different tree options in Twonky to see if there’s a way to get rid of the ā€œmusic,ā€ ā€œvideo,ā€ and ā€œphotosā€ folders it creates. If so, there might be a better workaround.

Please post any solutions that you may have found as well.

Does not work. I have all my MKV files properly listed under Shared Videos, but Twonky does not list it, not even in it’s internal browser accessible through MyBookWorld > Media > Media Server > PC MediaBrowser and  are included in the number of files seen under Server Status for Music tracks, Photos or Videos.

No matter what I do, I cannot see any mkv files via the Twonky settings or my TV. I only just got the drive at the weekend and immediately updated the firmware only to find this major flaw. I am really annoyed and frustrated by this as streaming all of my media files was the main reason I bought my MB.Ā  I really hope this gets fixed, whether the firmware if rolled back or updated.

I found a ā€œsort-ofā€ work-around. It seems that Twonky recognizes mkv files as Music, not video. These files may not be listed if you have them in a video directory and have Twonky search for ā€˜video-only’ in this directory. Here is how you change it:

Go to TwonkyMedia Settings, then click on Sharing (under Basic Setup). Make sure your video directory is set for All Content Type, not Video-only, Remember to SAVE CHANGES! You will then find your mkv files listed under Music.

Whether your media player will play it or not depends on your player.

Western Digital, please fix this by allowing us to upgrade Twonky?

Can I use another media server on this World Edition?

Thanks for the tip mate, will try when I get home from work.

I contacted support about the issue. They said they have never heard of the issue and will be taking it higher as well as contacting Twonky. I really hope they provide a quick fix as I have just got my MB and have never been able to stream any of my MKV’s!

@RonnyWD - Your little fix does work in that I can get Twonky to see my mkv files but my TV (Samsung PS63C7000) does not want to play ball. I have been messing around with my TV for the last half an hour or so but it just wont show any of my mkv’s stored on my drive.

This really is driving me insane! A fix better be released sooner rather than later but from what I have read on teh forums, its probably best not to hold my breath!

Great! A firmware update that basically made everything worse, and still locks up. So now what? Let me guess, you can’t downgrade right?

Yes,Ā  you are right.

Hi,

Thought I’d add to this thread for the fun of it if nothing else as it doesn’t seem like anyone has fixed the issue. Ā I’m having the same problem. Ā After finally getting my NAS back up and running after both drives were corrupted by the system and a subsequent long stint in data recovery, I update the firmware to discover that all my .mkv files are missing. Ā 265 .MKV’s gone, 5 .AVI’s remaining. Ā Brilliant.

Tried the suggestion above but unfortunately the WD Live Media Player plays my .MKV files as audio tracks when they’re in the music folder. Ā Perhaps I should consider purchasing some equipment that isn’t made by Western Digital, maybe then I could actually use it without spending what feels like MY ENTIRE LIFE FIXING PROBLEMS IT CREATES!

So, I now have a very expensive but completely useless pretty white brick. Ā With a light on. Ā Sort it out WD, this is NOT good enough.

Adam.

If you have the WD TV HD Live, so you can use the ā€œNetwork Sharesā€ mode to navigate and watch your MKVs

Yes, that is correct. Ā Although I spent a great deal of time setting up the folder.jpg naming system so that I could use Media Server. Ā The problem with Network Shares is that the movies tend to stop at least once halfway through. Ā Going through Media Server seems much more stable.

My QNAP 8TB arrived today and it looks amazing. Ā Also runs Twonky so I’m going to see how I get on.

Ok guys. I’m using a my book world edition II, most of my video files are divx so no problem with twonky there. Ā I have a few MKV 1080 for my classic films and like you all I’m frustrated with both WD’s Ā and Twonky’s stance here. Ā Only way I’ve found Ā to stream MKV’s to my WD TV Live is to rename the MKV to WMV, twonky sees the file and WD TV Live recognises that it’s actually an MKV. Ā Not the best solution but until Twonky resoolve the issue it’s the only way I’ve got the files to play.

I’ve just checked this way and it works. It also works exploring thru the shared files folder from the WD TV Live.

It seems to be a easy issue to solve. When is it going to be solved by Western Digital with a new fw release?
