My recently purchased MyBook Live (2TB) seems to have problems to sleep properly. For no reason, it wakes up every 15 minutes and stays awake for 10 minutes. This behavior shows in the ‘user.log’ and in the MBL (LED=blue for 15 minutes, green for 10 minutes (in operation) etc.). What could be the reason?
To detect the problem, I tried several things:
I checked the size of the config and log file (downloaded via UI), it is about 6MB only
- via the UI, I deactivated ALL network features (iTunes etc) => nothing changes
- I disconnected all other network devices (direct connection to the network router) => nothing changes
I connected the MBL to a network switch, without connecting any other device (no router or other device connected) => after some minutes, MBL wakes up and stays awake until router is connected to the switch
I updated the MBL firmware and tried everything again => nothing changes
Do you have any idea on how to solve this issue? Sleeping is essential for a healthy life!
My modem is a CBN (Compal Broadband Networks) CH6541E DOCSIS 3.0. This modem is from my network operator.
Note that my late reply is due to the fact that I replaced my drive (RMA). Unfortunately, the new drive (exacly the same type, same software version) has the same problem. So this might indicate that the problem is indeed in the modem. But I don’t have any idea how I can configure my modem such that he does not scan (and activates) all the instruments (including my NAS) on my network.
I think this issue is exiting the realm of Western Digital. If it really is the modem then there you may need to stick a router between your modem and your network and use that as a simple firewall.
My own router has some NetBIOS capability, for some reason, but it does not “do its oen thing” so everythign on my network can sleep.
Wish I could help you more. Will ponder on the issue.
I assume this is like a cable modem on it’s own that required a router or it is an all-in-one? You’ll need to log-onto the modem/router and see what options are available to you.
You’re welcome. When you read this please remember to mark your solution as accepted. Will make it easier for otthers fo tind. This is one of things always to investigate. Some routers, for whatever reasons, monitor what’s on the network and can cause issues like these where it seems the problem exisits within the NAS but in a matter of fact it’s elsewhere and the once piece of equipment that seems to be assumsed to be “perfect” is the router or cable modem.
The router you put in between the provided ISP cable/modem router and your network will do it’s basic firewall thing which solves the problem.
