mp4 not playing from Netgear NAS on WD TV 1.02.17

I have recently purchased the WDTV WDBPUF0000NBK and am having problems finding and opening some mp4 files on my Netgear ReadyNAS 316 (running firmware 6.1.8.)

I tried rolling back to 1.01.30 but the problem persisted. I then reapplied the 1.02.17 upgrade and there was still no change.

I’ve copied the same mp4 files onto a USB memory stick and they work fine from there, but the WDTV can’t see them on my NAS. It’s as though they don’t exist. When I have a folder full of these mp4 files, the WDTV can’t see the folder at all either. The files run fine on VLC from my laptop (either from a local copy or run from the same NAS location where the WDTV doesn’t even see the folder.)

I bought the unit for easy media streaming from my NAS. I’m not too worried about using it for streaming from the internet, it was more to save me having to plug my laptop into the TV, but it only plays a small percentage of my video files.

Any thoughts??

none … apart from, are you using “Media Shares” aka. DLNA / UPnP or  “Network Shares” aka. SMB Shares

“Network Shares” are the recommended way …  (apart from NFS which is the best way for Linux Users)
