My Cloud OS 5 App

Anyone else using the OS 5 mobile app? Of all things that WD broke when they upgrade to OS5, I think the app was the worst. I’ve been able to work around everything else, e.g. mysql/phpmyadmin no longer accessible, remote backups etc…but the app I can’t work around and it really T’s me off.

The whole purpose of purchasing this product was the “My Cloud” functionality. Being able to reach my personal storage anywhere at anytime via the My Cloud app on my mobile device. That is what sold me on this product as I don’t use public accessible cloud storage. I like keeping my data under my control, and not one else’s.

WD changed the functionality of the app so all a person can do is backup photos. However, a person can’t manage the backups once they’re on the NAS. If you back up a photo, then move it somewhere else, the photo gets backed up again. The old app was smart enough to know that it has already backed up the photo and would not back it up again.

A person can still see other files, but can’t do anything with them. With the old app, if I had a document on the NAS and I needed to view that document, I could access it and download it to my mobile. The new app doesn’t give you that functionality. Same with music, or videos etc…I could access all of my data and download where I was. (Just like a public cloud environment.)

Basically, what I am saying is that this is no longer a functioning “Cloud” environment and defeats the purpose of why I purchased the product in the first place. I’ve complained to WD, but they don’t seem to understand why I’m upset. I’m hoping that others can voice their opinion as well and hopefully WD will fix the app and allow us the opportunity to fully use the “Cloud” functionality.

@rosede I pointed out deficiencies of the OS5 app many times both here and direct to WD. I don’t think it will be fixed soon if ever.

Through the MyCloud OS5 app, I am actually able to:

  • watch videos
  • read pdfs and similar files
  • export txt, md, odt, doc, etc… to the appropriate app
  • download any file locally

both on iOS (app v4.12.1) and Android (app v4.12.1.1799)

If you back up a photo, then move it somewhere else, the photo gets backed up again. The old app was smart enough to know that it has already backed up the photo and would not back it up again.

I have not tested this, so I cannot speak to it. But I would recommend sending feedback also through the app itself!

Comments and suggestions regarding features have been studiously ignored since the beginning.

This includes features that many view as necessary to make the devices work as originally intended.

The “photo backup thing” is one of those features.

I don’t just want to view files, I want to be able to download those files and save them to my device, which I cannot. I don’t know how you’re able to download any file, but I cannot. The app does not give me that functionality.

Yes, I know they’ve been ignored, that is why they are loosing customers. I am planning on putting Open Media Vault on my 4100. I can’t access it as a “Cloud” device, but at least I know that. I purchased the WD My Cloud for that purpose, and they took that functionality away from me.

What I do is I use the “Open in” option that you can access by clicking on the three dots on the side of a file. Then you can either open them in a separate app with save option, or in a file manager to save the file to a specific location on your phone/tablet.

That’s a single file. What if I want to download an entire folder of mp3’s? I don’t want to open the mp3, I wan to download the mp3. I want to be able to download an entire albums worth of mp3’s, not just a single one at a time. I could do that with the old app, I can’t with this app.

That’s just one example, not gripe. And yes, I did provide feedback in the app and they did contact me. The person who contacted me couldn’t seem to understand why I’m not happy with it.

Yep, that’s true :frowning: I will also send in feedback asking for the feature.
It should be as simple as adding a download button also for when one select multiple files or a folder…

You would not be the first to provide feedback.
WD from the start has been reluctant to even admit shortcomings exist in the capabilities of this app.

I have not opened the app for months. . . .but from what I saw the entire app was complete waste of time. A powerpoint presentation pushed as a completed product.

The sad part is. . . the entire indexing debacle was created to support this pathetic app that few people will use.

The only purpose that I can see that it serves is it does a good job at backing up my wife’s photo’s. The old app would hang if there were to many, and she LOVES to take pictures. (I curse the person who invented the digital camera, and then integrated it into a phone. :joy:) However, with that said, I can’t manage the photos on the back end. In the past I would manually manage the photo’s, putting them in groups that made it easier for her to find. But as I said previously, this app isn’t intelligent enough to know that it already backed up images. If I move an image to another folder, the app will back it up again. :rage:

I think the app is faster and more responsive than the old one, but other than that they screwed up a bunch of stuff. I find that I have to login to the webapp in order to download files. It lets me select more than one and it puts then into a zip file which is better than nothing, but I still have to click on them one in one.
