My Cloud security

I was discussing on a forum the speed of accessing files that were contained on my My Cloud hard drive…someone pointed out that all I needed to do was type in the IP address of my hard drive in the windows explorer and I ould have immediate access without having to go through apps…

…which scares me since there are 3 other people who live here and we share the same internet!!! Getting the IP address of the hard drive is as simple as using a scanner. I thought the password on my hard drive was enough…how do I keep them out of it? Create a separate network?

Create a private share , limit it to a particular user/password combination.

Don’t let anyone have the admin login to access the drive , or they could login and reset access to public.

The My Cloud is NOT a “hard drive” per se its a network attaches storage device (NAS). If you haven’t read the My Cloud Dashboard Help or read the My Cloud User Manual (http://support.wdc.com/product.aspx?ID=904) you should. Both will explain how to setup Private Shares and grand per user access to those Private Shares.

Unfortunately WD has decided to keep one Share (Public) public so it cannot (officially) be configured to Private. As such there will always be one Share anyone can potentially access. Unofficially there are possible ways, using SSH, to configure the main Public Share so it is no longer public or visible.

They can’t get at the data to play some media, but this address leads to the My Cloud Dashboard, which is not good. If they don’t have the password for admin they only get to opening screen of dashboard as already mentioned.
