My cloud security and sharing

Hi, please can you point me to atricle on the various options for security and sharing.

I have just set up a mycloud 2tb and my cloud is visible on all computers on my home network irrespective of who the user is. There is then password protection on the mycloud dashboard and further setting up of shares. Yet without setting up any of these the files are already shared through the network.

I’m trying to understand why would I want to set up a share if it’s all shared anyway? Conversely, how do I stop people from viewing files and folders of my user through the network?

I assume there is an article or thread explaining all of this but I haven’t been able to find it.

Many thanks.

When a share is created it defaults to being publicly shared to everyone. One can change this by selecting the share in the WD My Cloud Adminstration interface and turning the Public Access to Off. Once turned to off one can then set which users can access the share and read/write data to it.

If you haven’t already done so read through the User Manual. Also check WD Knowledge Base.

One thing to keep in mind is that when viewing the contents of the WD My Cloud drive with a file manager (like Windows Explorer) you will see all the first level folders on the drive reguardless of their public access status. Only when you try to access a drive that has its Public Access turned off will you be asked to enter a user name and password to access the share contents. The default setting for the folder called Pubic is also a public share. Any content in these folders will be seen to all unless one turns off the public share for that shared folder.

Thanks.

I’ve read some of the stuff but I still can’t figure it all out.

1: do the windows and wd users match up? For e.g. if ‘john’ is the name of the windows account and john is also the wd user will he log on too wd when logging on to windows or must he input his password in wd each time afresh?

  1. I connected my blackberry without inputting the code you are told to generate for device access. I only put in my password. So when is the code required?

  2. In explorer you get the cloud in the netword and in devices. If you double click on the cloud in device a device installing pop up appears at the bottom. Is this required and how does it differ from the network folders?

Cheers!

The WD My Cloud user name and password are not related to the a Windows PC login and pasword. The WD My Cloud User is created via the WD My Cloud adminstration screen. Again, take the time to read through the User Manual (see link to it in prior post). It is pretty straight forward in explaining how most things work with the WD My Cloud. See Chapter 7 in the user manual for more information on Users and how to set them up. Chaper 8 in the user manual details how to setup and manage Shares.

Normally on my mobil devices I use the WD WD My Cloud app. If you manuall add a device in the app then you would enter the activation code. Otherwise the app should ask you to select the Log in name then you enter your password.

If, when using Windows Explorer, you double click on the device and a popup appears indicating something is being installed then you’ve double clicked on the wrong icon. Generally the icon for the WD My Cloud should show up under Computer, not under Media Devices, Other Devices or Storage.

Many thanks.

I still have a problem that I try to access a private share from the network section of the windows explorer. When I click on ‘john’ which is the section of my files a windows security screen pops up. Whatever I try putting in it will not grant me access to the files. My share does not have a password so I assume I only need the correct domain and user name. So I type in wdmycloud\john with no password but still I can’t get in.

This was earlier. Now I must have changed something with the user/shares becase when I click on the john folder in networks I get an error message ‘windows cannot access //wdmycloud/john’.

I’ve been through the manual but the section for accessing non-public files through windows expolorer does not mention the password. I have tried adding a password in the wd dashboard to my name but still I get the error.

Just an update: I restarted the computer and the security logon screen now appears. The domain is ‘home’ and I’ve tried my WD username and password as it is without luck. I then tried wdmycloud\john (john being my WD username) and password but again it won’t let me in.

So my question is: how do you access non-publicly shared folder from windows explorer?

Thanks

In one rare instances on one particular PC I had issues logging into my WD My Cloud with a user name and password. What worked for the log in name in that case was to use the WD My Cloud’s IP address then user name. Example: “\192.168.1.10\johnsmith” It is important when logging in with this method to use “\” (without quotes) in front of the IP Address or PC/WD My Cloud name.

Also if your PC’s workgroup name is something other than “workgroup” then it is generally a good idea to change the WD My Cloud workgroup name to match the workgroup used by the PC. You can change that setting on the WD My Cloud  under Settings → Network → Network Services → Workgroup Name. Sometimes having different workgroup names may cause issues with login or access of networked devices.

You are right that the problem is pc specific as I can access the non-public files my other pc. However your solution does not work on the problem pc. Any other suggestions?

What is the OS on the PC that is having trouble accessing private shares? About the only other suggestion is to reboot the PC that cannot access the private shares and then try accessing the share again even though you’ve indicated you tried that previously.

Generally if the PC can see the drive it should be able to use the drive’s username and password to access a private share. As indicated previusly sometimes you have to access the drive via its IP address.

I’m using W7 on both pcs.

If I wanted to remove all temp files and any vestige of wd and the network setting how would I go about it? I looked in the manual and it has info only for a regular control panel uninstall.

Thanks
