I give up on myCloud. I’ve had problems for months and now it’s not working any more (Yellow flashing light this time and I’ve been through this forum trying out everything).
Even if I fix it, I don’t trust it any more.
What’s the drive like inside the myCloud? Is it something I can pull out and throw into a (3.5?) enclosure?
Or is it something they’ve adapted that can only be used in myCloud?
Do a subforum search for “unbrick”. There are lots of threads that discuss pulling the internal hard drive from the My Cloud enclosure and attaching it to a computer to unbrick the drive, typically using Linux.
The internal drive is a WD 3.5 SATA hard drive, typically (at least for some My Cloud units) a WD Red SATA hard drive.
I’ve already looked at the unbrick theads, but I’ve had several different problems and just don’t trust it any more.
I bought mine as a refurb from WD so I’ve resigned myself to it being an early model that’s probably never worked and they tried to fix and resell.
So now I’m more interested to know if I can just use the 4tb drive as a normal hard drive. My new router has the ability connect a USB drive so, while not being as useful as mycloud, it would suit my needs and be much more dependable than what I’ve gone through with mycloud over the past few months…
Yes you can remove the drive and put it in another enclosure. You would most likely have to repartition and reformat the drive however due to the current formatting and partitioning used to run the My Cloud firmware.
Some of the unbrick guides tell you how to open it and remove the drive. The rest is up to you whether you want to complete the unbrick process or use it anywhere else.
Just remember, this is a Linux drive, so if you need the info, have to use Linux tools to see the data. Otherwise, as stated before, depending how you want to use it, format/partition might be necessary.
