I’m thinking of putting the hard drive from my MyCloud 3TB in a new PC build. Obviously I realize it would void my warranty and it’s probably not recommended but I kind of just want the WD red (it is a red isn’t it?) out of it. Thanks.
Sure. It’s a normal WD Red SATA drive. Easily detached even.
Can the WD My Cloud hard drive be removed from the enclosure, repartitioned and reformatted to be used in a PC or external SATA to USB adapter as a standard hard drive? Yes.
Can one remove the My Cloud hard drive, install it within a PC and have that PC operate like the My Cloud? No. The firmware/Linux OS on the My Cloud hard drive is generally designed to run only on the hardware of the My Cloud motherboard. When one reformats and or repartitions the My Cloud hard drive they will destroy/wipe out the My Cloud firmware/OS that is contained on one of the My Cloud hard drive partitions.
Yeah I didn’t mean to still have it function as a mycloud, thank you for the quick answers^^
You can also get the data off it by installing an extfs driver. e.g.
