MyCloud Mirror is completely unusable on a Mac - is there a solution or should I bin it?

Having endured this uselss drive for 3 months, am now ready to send it back.

It’s expensive - £400 and I cannot risk actually using it. Why?

  1. It is uselessly slow. Just in the process of trying to recover 166GB of data from it to a old-fashioned FW800 drive and it has taken 24 hours. That’s 0.1GB/min

  2. The drive runs 24 x 7 doing God knows what. Indexing? No idea, but there is little chance of it lasting out of warranty when it is running continuously.

  3. Any sort of transfer of large amd complex folders is glacially slow.

Clicking on WDMYCloudMirror in the Finder takes 30-60 secs plus to even APPEAR (even though the MCM is running 100%!!!). A 1TB WD MyBook attached to another netwok Mac appears in 2 secs.

My wireless network seems to manage to transfer the same folder at very high rates. 10x or 20x faster.

The iOS app: it can eventually display a file list, but if I click on ‘photos’ or ‘video’ it sits there endlessly. Trying to actually read something from the drive is very very slow.

Simple question - can this unit be made to perform at a useful rate on a Mac network? And, no, I don’t want to have to hack about with the software to make it usable.  Simply because come f/w upgrade, it will no doubt all stop being usable again.

Are you able to share the model of your router an a brief description of your network structure? There could be a bottleneck affecting local performance.

I have a wireless network centred upon an Apple Time Capsule 3TB.  Internet comes in to the TC via ethernet from an ISP-supplied modem/router.

There are up to 3 Macs on this wireless network plus up to 4 iOS devices.

The MCM connects to the TC via GB ethernet.

I can achieve significantly faster copy speeds if I hang a (very old!) 1TB MyBook Studio onto the TC USB port!

Single files copy reasonably well, but folders with many items slow down exponentially with the MCM. e.g. a 4GB folder of 12 items takes twice as long to copy to the MCM as it does to the MBS.

The MCM takes 15-30secs to appear in the Finder, whereas the 1TB MBS hanging off of the Airport will appear in 2-3secs.

Maybe you should try contacting WD’s Technical Support about this. You can do so either by phone or email.
