NAS Share and Media Library (xml and metathumb files)

I like the WDTV SMP a lot. I like the media library feature even more. But, I now have a large number of “extra” files in the share subdirectory. Is there some way to have all the .xml and ,metathumb files reside in their own subdirectory rather than in the share subdirectory itself. These files clutter up the subdirectory.

Or is this the cost of the media library.

If the question has been answered before I apologize, but my search of the forum turned up nothing.

nope thats how it is. hopefully WD will change it to allow folders for the metadata in the future.

Thanks for the response…

So this should be a request for future revisions…

The cost of getting the metadata…

Personally I think this ia an absolute liberty and WD need to get it sorted.

This has made me very annoyed and even contemplate sending the thing back! My NAS is my NAS and it should leave my folders alone.  If WDTV live wishes to have a database of material for the Media Library it should put it in its own folder on the attached USB drive -which is what I was led to expect from the manual.  It should not LITTER its files where they are not wanted!

The best solution would have been an SD card slot in the unit itself - like that abominable Popbox!

Surely your attached USB drive is your USB drive as well. What you are saying is that you don’t mind the info being put on YOUR USB Dtive but not on YOUR NAS drive. How would WD know what everybody wants. How about a person like say me who has no attached USB drive, where does my info go?

I also agree it is horrible.  I also the same share to allow others in my house to watch movies from a pc.  I ended up getting Winamp pro which allows to setup a library of media kinda like the way the WDTV does it.  Otherwise for them to have to choose the movie from a file explorer is just aweful.

Just before I read this thread I post the following comment on a different thread but it kinda relates:

I wish that if you move or delete a file from the WDTV live smp it would move or delete the other files as well such as backdrops, xml, metathumbs.  I can’t see any reason why this would not be practical to implement in the firmware.  the WDTV created those file so it should be able to detect them and get rid of them.  Otherwise it starts to be a mess and becomes a hassel.

It is currently too much work to maintain.

Personally, I think it would be great if WD allowed the users to choose where this data is saved to, ie: in the movie folders, on a thumdrive attached to the SMP or NAS or anywhere else for that matter that the SMP can access, this is how YAMJ does it and it’s a great way to have less clutter.
