Netflix Super HD?

WD TV Live is not listed in the Netflix Super HD supported device list at http://support.netflix.com/en/node/8731#gsc.tab=0 .

Does it support Netflix Super HD, will there be a firmware update to add the support, or will it never work?

Thanks,

Rasmus

I am also interested in knowing this. I would like very much to be able to use Netflix SuperHD on my WD Live.

+1 - Also interested in getting confirmation that the Roku isn’t going to beat out the WDTV on this issue!

If you look, it does mention devices that support 1080p. The WDTV already supported that, so will probably support the new SuperHD. Most likely, it’s just the newer encoding algorithm (done a month or so ago to lower bitrates) at a higher bitrate. They are limiting it to their own CDN to keep costs down, which is also why they cut the bitrate of their normal feeds.

I’m amazed that Verizon FiOS (at least in my area) isn’t covering it yet, and we can get 300mb download!

I went to their site and my ISP and connection is Open-Connect (SuperHD) ready.  I then turned on the feed details and saw X-High/HD.  I though that X-High/HD was removed from netflix (or just netflix USA?)  So does this mean I was watching the new SuperHD?

It appears that my ISP in the UK is supported (talk talk) and according to this post on a forum the wdtv supports super HD

Well just opened the Netflix service on my WD live streaming and I can see a number of Super HD titles. I am currently watching a film called 9, however even though it is labelled Super HD I have no idea if I am actually watching it in this format.

Where do you see it labelled “SuperHD” ?

Its labelled in the right hand film description box as you highlight a movie. I am in the UK so I don’t if this layout is worldwide. There is the title of the film and then underneath the year / length and underneath that the star rating with Super HD in a box and usually 5.1 in another box.

To see what level you have, hit the OPTION button while it’s playing. It looks like SuperHD is now the X-High/HD.

Some users of PS3’s have said there is a bug where it says High/SD, but it’s actually HD (there is a sample video that displays the bitrate in the video.)

I’m in the UK on BE and i see Super HD titles in Netflix on the WDTV now. No idea what it’s playing in (hitting Options during playback doesn’t do anything), looks the same as HD to me which was already quite good.

Out if interest does it say that your ISP (be) is ready for super HD on the page below.
https://signup.netflix.com/superhd

Yeah it says:

"Your Internet Provider is ready for Super HD!

Your Internet Provider is part of the Open Connect network, a free partnership with Netflix. Netflix will automatically play movies and TV shows in Super HD on a supported device if your connection is fast enough."

Make certain you have a recent firmware. I think the OPTIONS thing to display the quality was added a few updates ago.

Netflix is not available in my country … but i was curious as to what “Super HD” meant.

It’s what Netflix calls … “Full HD”  or 1080p     (nothing really ‘Super’ about it honestly )

On screen sizes of 42 Inch Tv’s or less … then no … you’re not gonna see any dramatic difference in picture quality.

TV’s “Bigger” than 42 Inch … Yes, you will see a difference in picture quality.

REAL Super HD  is 4K TV’s (3840 × 2160) 2160p

Ultra HD  8K TV’s (7680 × 4320) 4320p

Of course, you would need to take out a second mortgage to afford one of these

I was watching some movies yesterday on Netflix USA (while in the UK) and some of the HD titles had audio coming in to my pioneer vsx-1121 as Dolby Digital Plus!! Not sure if this is part of the super HD, but it looked and sounded amazing! Not all files came in with HD audio, but a few select did…

SuperHD is just 1080p at higher bitrates.

Look for “5.1” in the title. They have been using DD+ for quite awhile. Not all HD titles have 5.1. My only complaint is my receiver takes several seconds doing an HDMI handshake when DD+ is activated, sometimes causing me to miss out on some audio.

Just looked at my account on the web and noticed that I had selected a low quality streaming option. I changed it to highest quality and now I see X-High/HD when I stream a Super HD movie and press options. I am also able to select Dolby Digital Plus 5.1.
