Network, "invalid username or password"

My new WDTV does list networked PCs. When I select one, a login box appears with the username prefilled with “anonymous”. After I accept this by selecting the green tick and pressing OK, I get the “invalid username or password” message. My PCs don’t have any passwords set. I used to to be able to access all shared folders with all of my previously owned media players, WD, Seagate and Netgear models.

After most faled login attempts, the WDTV becomes sluggish and I have to do a power reset.

Is this a know problem? Or do I need to stop the WDTV trying to login somehow?

It means your PC is not configured to allow Everyone to access shares.

Yes, you are right. I had overlooked that on my Vista PC. It was also included in the suggestions from WD support.

The odd thing is that all three  XP PCs can now be accessed also, I have made no settings changes to them.

Thank you.

I was finally left with a Toshiba 1TB USB HDD that would not share. By comparing its settings to others that would share, I found that “Everyone” also needed to be added to the “Group or user names” list under the Security tab in the HDDs properties.
