Network Setup Problems

I purchased the MyCloud 4TB just before christmas and I am having trouble setting it up. I have ATT Uverse internet. So there is a cable modem, connected to that is a wireless router.

If I connect the MyCloud up to the wireless router, I can see it on my Mac (under shared drives and through WD Apps) - however, outside my network I can only access the drive from my iphone, not my laptop using the WD App. And the backup time machine backup works

If I connect the MyCloud to the cable modem, the the backup stops, I can’t access at all.

I am confused, ideally I want to access it from within my network (like a shared drive) and outside my network on my laptop and cell phone. What am I doing wrong?

A couple of things to try and verify:

  • your router should give a fixed IP addess to your My Cloud. This is in the router settings, typically in the DHCP settings or something like this,

  • enable upnp on your router

  • set up your router to forward the 8080 port to the (fixed) IP address of your router port 80, and 8443 to the 443.

  • in the my cloud interface, set up the 8080 and 8443 information in the settings, cloud access area,

  • reboot the mycloud. Verify the IP address is as expected, and that you don’t have a relayed connection.

At that point, you should be able to access your device from outside your home by using the WD My Cloud application.

Thanks for the help. Here is what I have so far.

  1. The Router is using DHCP and has assigned an IP to the device.

  2. I have verified that UPnP is enabled on the router.

  3. I have (I think) setup the port forwarding correctly to the IP of the device.

  1. Under Cloud Access I have a user setup with access and logins for wdmycloud.com but the connection status is No Internet Access. Under settings Remote Access is set to On. Under configuration it is set to auto. I have tried manual and setting the exterior port 1 to 8080 and 80 then exterior port 2 to 8443 and 433. None of those worked either.

  2. Under Settings > Network Status is No Internet, it is set to DHCP, SSH - OFF and FTP - ON.

However, I did try to access the device using my cell phone (not using network wifi) and it was able to connect through the app.

Ideally, you’d set the router to give a *fixed* IP address to the device.

For some reason I cannot see the picture you attached, but the description of your settings looks right aside from the point above.

At any rate, if you can access the device through your phone’s cellular network, you are in good shape.

You might want to reboot the device to see if the message about lack of Internet connection remains.

Thanks I have confirmed that I am able to access the drive from outside the network. I will try and reboot to see if that no connection message goes away.

One last question. Is there a way to map the mycloud drive to my mac when I am remote? I have the wd cloup app installed and that seems to be working, however I don’t see how I can add files from my remote location.

You should be able to drag and drop files from your Mac to the WD My Cloud App. I didn’t try this on my Mac yet, but you can also set your file sharing to the SMB protocal, and you should be able to mount the share.

I rebooted the device and it still says no internet connection. But I am able to access it from outside the network - strange. And I can still access it from within the network. So I am not sure what is going on there.

And yes, I figured out how to drag and drop from the app remotely - thanks.
