New EX4100 - Feedback for WD

I recently purchased a new EX4100 (24TB), and am very satisfied with the unit overall.  I am, for now, just using it for storage but would like to provide a couple notes for WD from my initial impression:

The share permissions model is too limiting and could use some work.  I’m sure I can get around this if I really need to via ssh, but for my example, I wanted to put in place a read-only public share that an *authenticated* user would be able to modify data on.  This is not currently possible through the UI.  An example usage is for a music/movies library, I want anonymous/public read-only access to the library but still need to maintain the library.  I do not want media applications modifying the metadata or adding files, so I am stuck with maintaining a read-only authenticated account for media applications, which is an unnecessary annoyance, and while mine support authentication, I can see that being a show-stopper under many circumstances.

I believe a second power brick should be included with the unit.  After re-reading the online product documentation I see now that it was carefully worded that one “could” be added, but I’m a pretty smart fellow and missed that before purchasing the unit.  I would prefer to see the price of the unit go up a couple dollars and get this in-box, or at least be very clear on the product information that it’s an additional cost.  It was disappointing to only have the single brick included.

Thanks for your time and effort in producing this “prosumer” unit, I hope to get many, many years of use out of it.  The performance is good enough for me (I get gigabit reads/writes, and my network can’t go any faster!), the form factor is great, and I even think the price tag was fair :)

Hi there, welcome to the community.

You can go  here and post your ideas, and if WD seems that they are reasonable, they might implement them in the future.

I have purchased 2 of these units, like yours both 24TB.

As they will be used for my large movie collection, to be accessed by all my rooms on my home network, I opted for RAID1

This gave me 11.8TB /drive, with the RAID1 mode creating 2 volumes on each unit.

Each Volume id apprx 5.94TB.

Started copying movie files across until volume1 was filled, then nothing. Unable to continue copying into Volume2, it appears to be invisable, and inaccessable.

Reported it within the support portal, but as to date nothing, I would surmise WD idea of support is to rely on people out here resolving their problems for them.

We all are at the mercy of WD, and my outlay is expensive as I sit here with thousands of dollers outlay, and two EX4100’s lying usless.

I also can see many others are having their own problems, so perhaps we need to start balancing WD ‘Out of the BOX’, revous on YouTube with some hard facts and a reality check to warn people of these non working problems.

If I want to decorate my desktop with an black brick with LEDs I know of a far cheaper way of doing it, with bricks and paint.

I have passed your experience along to support, please check your private messages.
