New WD Easystore portable drive won’t update. Unit installed OK I think, WD Discovery and WD Utilities shortcuts are on my desktop.
When I plug in the Easystore, I get a pop-up screen: Preferences Screen, It says the current version of WD Discovery is 1.2.39 and the only option on this screen is to update the easystore.
Easystore appears to go through entire udate, getting past my computers “permission” pop-up.
After granting permission a new WD pop-up screen Says: “updating”.
Next Pop-up screen Says: "WD Discovery update failed.
I can open SmartWare app from WD Discovery shortcut, but I can’t access the back-up tab - it is not highlighted. My only option on this home screen is to click “Drop box” Screen says Login required. Next screen says: “Upgrade to smartware PRO”
I just want to back up to the WD portable drive???
I’m pretty lost.

WD Easystore is not compatible with WD Smartware that’s why you don’t see it as a back up target unless you upgrade to the pro version.
Try downloading WD Back Up
Easystore is made by WD, but it is not a WD product set up to discuss here. Check with Best Buy, it is their product.
Really? The two options shown upon opening WD Discovery are WD Smartware and WD utilities. They came with the WD Discovery download. Makes no sense to me, But Thank you for the information!
I will check with BestBuy, thanks!
I wish I would have know all this when I talked to the BestBuy man about it. Got the 4TB on sale $109.99 plus free $25.00 BB GC.
False MIke… I have this drive. The documentation inside the box states clearly to contact WD for support and WD is directly involved in the arbitration process of any legal claims. Just because they only sell it at BB does not make it a BB product. Insignia products on the other hand are a Best Buy product as Best Buy owns that company.
Agree, although if EasyStore drives are only sold at Best Buy, then it they exclusively a Best Buy product made just for BB by WD. This does not make it a branded WD product; it is a BB product. Anyway, I could really care less about an EasyStore drive; if I want a branded WD drive I will buy one over an Easystore drive…
Mike. All the documentation inside these drives clearly state to contact WD for any issues not BB. Also any legal issues and arbitration issues are handled by WD not BB. BB does not make drives or even own WD therefore this is a WD product not BB. Also not sure why you rather have a WD over this since this is a WD drive. I have it, use bitlocker encription and a password on it. Works flawlessly. Furthermore. When you take the drive out of the case the bare drive is a WD Red (NAS) drive Model WD40EFRXw/NASware 3.0. Nowhere does it show a BB logo. Nowhere in the documentation that comes with the drive does it mention BB.
Your logic is like saying that a Faith Hill
Album only sold at BB is not a Faith Hill album. But BB. Last time I checked BB is not an artist nor they play cover songs.
Not interested is discussing this further. Not that important for me. So, “whatever you say” is fine with me. Really.
Actually it is not whatever I say but what the documentation provided with hard drives clearly states. I’m sorry you can’t deal with that. At least your avatar describes your points really well. At least got that going. Have a good one
