Only a public folder exists in MyCloud 3tb

Greetings to all.
I would like to start by saying that MyCloud is the worst experience i ever had with a consumer pc related product.
I am trying 2 hours to set MyCloud up and running and still dont know what i am doing.
But now to the point of my question.
I purchased a 3TB MyCloud. First step was to connect it to the router. But since this is going to be used in a university i can only connect it to the available ethernet ports of my university office. And i connected it through a switch. Through this switch i should mention my pc, printer etc are all connected to the internet.
After i connected the MyCloud i went to the setup site as advised by the getting started paper. The problems begyn right away since after searching for my device it asked me to provide a username and a password. I left the username as admin and password blank but it didnt sign in saying the username/password was wrong.
I suspet that this was maybe due to the fact that in this university network there were other MyClouds and it tried to connect to them.
So from the site i could not sign in to the hard drive and could not find a single line on the mycloud site to set up an account. The only option was sign in.
After watching youtube videos i downloaded the prgramm from the wd site.
This programm was to setup MyCloud.
But when it searched for the drive it could not find it and found 2 other dirves with different serial numbers.
Finally i connected the drive straight to the ethernet port of my laptop and following som youtube video i was able to set something up. I connected the drive back to the ethernet port of my university network and tried to find it using its ip from inside Windows.I found the ip and finally connected and set up my accounts but still when i type wdmycloud/ on my browser the username password i give are never correct and i have to sign in using the ip of the drive.
This has been really frustrating in my experience and is nowhere near the simplicity stated on the site and the box of the product.
Finally after all this i see the screen attached.
1)What is the .twonkymedia folder and why is it there?
2)Where is my private folder etc?All i see is a public folder/
3)How can i create folders outside the public folder there is no option as i can see.

Sorry for the long post and the frustration. I would appreciate any help.

First you shouldn’t have been asked to provide a user name and password to access the single bay My Cloud during the initial setup of the single bay My Cloud. I assume you have a single by My Cloud, do you? One may be asked during the setup to create a User or password but those are generally used after setting up the single bay My Cloud.

Second, there really isn’t a need to use the WD setup software application. Instead one can generally perform the My Cloud setup/configuration by accessing the My Cloud Dashboard with their web browser.

Not sure why the .twonkymedia folder is showing that is supposed to be hidden. Perhaps you should perform a 40 second reset and start the setup process all over again using your web browser to access the My Cloud Dashboard.

Generally the single bay My Cloud is marketed and designed for home/home office use. Typically most people normally do not have a problem setting up the single bay My Cloud in a home environment using a consumer level or broadband provided router. In certain rare cases, like using AT&T Uverse, one should use a switch/hub between the My Cloud and the broadband provided router due to a specific network communication issue between the two devices. Because you indicated you are in a University environment there may be network settings or network configurations done by the University IT department which may be interfering with setting up a single bay My Cloud. It is not uncommon when connecting a computer to a University network, that one follows a certain network setup procedure provided by the University.

Lastly, if you haven’t done so already, read through the My Cloud User Manual (http://support.wdc.com/product.aspx?ID=904) and or the My Cloud Dashboard Help. Both explain how to configure the various options/features of the My Cloud.

You’re using your device in an ‘office’ environment, not in the simple home network environment it is designed for (ADSL/fibre modem, router, MyCloud). That won’t help.

You may not be able to access the Dashboard (UI) by using WDMyCloud because of your universitry network (name translation), or, if you have not renamed your device to avoid clashes with other MyClouds in the network, it will not be unique. So you will have to access it via IP address.

Once you can access the Dashboard, you can set the device up completely via the Dashboard; you do not need to run any setup programs; they’re just intended to ‘make things easier’ for Joe Public. They don’t always do this…

You should download and read the User Manual (google it: WD have broken the link on the page below, and make sure you get the one applicable to your firmware), and maybe read some of the Learning Centre FAQs:

You don’t need to access the device using the WD Desktop App; it’s a NAS; just connect it as a Windows Network Drive, or similar on a Mac.

The .twonkymedia folder is for the Twonky DLNA media server. I don’t know why it’s now visible in ‘User space’, as it’s a system utility, and has been hidden in ‘System space’ on previous models and firmware releases. (The HDD is split into partitions to support the MyCloud NAS system, and for User data storage; the User isn’t normally allowed to see the System partition, so they can’t go deleting files and breakign the embedded linux system used to create the NAS).

Bennor has just chipped in; I’d agree with his suggestion to do a 40-second reset. Something doesn’t look right with your setup. If you’ve just bought it, and have no data on it, I’d be tempted to do a Quick Factory Restore (from the Dashboard).

Thank you fot your input. You are right to say that this is designed for home netwroks and thus in an office environment its setup could be different.
All this that i wrote i forgot to mention were after i did a hard reset. Now i did a quick factory restore since i had no data in yet and it seems better now. The .twonkymedia folder is not there anymore.
Now i see 2 folders. One named Public and one with my name on it.
Both of these folder have the same icon on their left the blue cloud with two people.
How can i make my folder private? Shouldnt my folder be private an be a solid blue cloud icon next to it?
Thank you again.

You can only set a Share to private by accessing the My Cloud Dashboard > Shares, then select the Share from the left hand column, then set Public Access to Off. Then you can configure User access (Full Access, Read Only, No Access) to that now private Share. All subfolders/directories within a Share inherit their permissions from the Share itself. Officially one does not have control over setting individual permissions on subfolders/subdirectories within a Share at this time.

Again, if you haven’t done so already see the My Cloud User Manual (http://support.wdc.com/product.aspx?ID=904) which has chapters covering Users and Shares along with how to configure Shares for private access and assign user permissions to those private shares. The My Cloud Dashboard Help similarly has information on private Shares.

Once a Share is set to private while anyone who can access the My Cloud will see that now private Share they should be prompted to enter a user name and password (for example when using Windows File Explorer or Mac Finder) to access the contents of that Share.

This is the worst product that I have ever bought. first of all there is no help on the net. and everytime you search for keyword they direct you to the same site. I am having issue with login to my wd mycloudf through my win 10. it is impossible to do it. I am an IT dude, but there is something wrong with this product or there is not enough information on the net.

What specific issue? What is the specific error message? Do you have SMB1.0/CIFS enabled in Windows 10? Microsoft disables SMB1.0 in new Windows 10 installs and in current installations through patch updates.
