Remove Hard Drive or send back

I have had my WD N900 Central for about five months and it has been nothing but trouble. Sould I try to send it back to WD for a refund? Past the send back date on Amazon.  How about removing the hard drive at least and using it as an external drive? Is that possible? Thanks
