I have a WD Live + that I picked up a couple weeks ago. Everything works fine – the player occasionally hangs and I need to unplug and plug it back in. Overall pretty happy with it.
When I rip DVDs with the same settings with DVDfab, the player seems inconsistent in displaying 4:3 and 16:9 ratio videos. Some of my 4:3 videos fill up all of the screen (720p 16:9 tv) while other 4:3 movies display correctly with bars on the sides. I haven’t gotten a widescreen movie to fill the screen yet- bars on top and bottom. Apologies if I’m not explaining this well! The DVD menu will fill up the screen but then the actual video will not fill up the screen.
I’ve played with settings in the WD player with no changes-- any advice? Maybe burning the iso files to my external hd instead of the vob files? Or re-encode the video files altogether with handbrake?
DVDFab is good. That’s all I’ve used. Just tell it to make a raw ISO file.
DVD MPEGs have flags inside them that tell the player how to display the video: Anamorphic / Pan-Scan / etc. Those flags are what the WDTV uses to format the video.
I’ve yet to come across any that aren’t correctly displayed; 4:3 are pillarboxed, and 16:9s are full-screen.
Make sure your WDTV is set to WIDE SCREEN video. Make sure your TV is correctly set (can’t tell you how to do that because different TVs use different names for all that.)
The ONLY movie that I’ve ever had an issue with was “The American President.” But it was the Studio that screwed it up;
They took a 16:9 movie and shoved it into a 4:3, so it’s PILLAR *AND* LETTERBOXED.

Hah! That was me back in February! My DVD disks rarely see the light of day any more.
Found one too many DVDs with dried peanut butter and jelly on them… That was the last straw. Now here I am with four streamers and an 8TB NAS… How’s that for economy? :smileyvery-happy:
