Hello everyone. I have the WD cloud mirror device. Can someone please send me instructions on how to setup the shares for individual users. I have created 3 users with 3 shares with a password but somehow we can still access each other’s shares still.
There are two types of shares, public and private. Public ones, as the name suggests, can be accessed by anyone with access to the MCM, whereas private ones are more restricted.
If you select a share in the shares menu on the MCM dashboard, in the information/settings list that appears, you can set public on/off (ie public/private) on the top slider just beneath the name and description boxes. If you select private (setting the public slider to off) then the user access selection at the bottom of the page (you may need to scroll down) activates, and there you can set the access permissions for each user on the MCM (read/write, read-only or deny access) as you wish.
Note that this is only for SMB or webdav (I think) access - if you’re accessing things by NFS then things are different (NFS can only be restricted by IP address if I remember well). Even if the users have no access to shares, they will still be visible when you look at the top level MCM under Windows Explorer or equivalent (you just won’t be able to access anything within them, or even open the shares to see).
Thanks for the reply. I did setup my wife for read access only for my share but she can still dump photos into my share and vise versa.
Just to ask the obvious - when you connect to the SMB share from your Windows machine (or whatever) you are using your own personal user name and password to log into the MCM, not admin or something already saved on the machine?
Aside from that, confirm that the shares are not public (if you’ve been able to set user privs then they should be private, as public share disables user priv settings) and maybe try rebooting the MCM after you’ve set everything. Also perhaps reboot your computer you’re using as access as well, as it may be caching your access or something.
I think I looged into originally on both phones as admin but it doesn;t prompt me to enter a username and password when I use WD cloud app on the phones. How do I change it from admin to using own credentials? I am confused by activating the phone to a share?
Thanks
Have you given admin access to both shares? That would explain why you can write to both, basically if you’ve used that log-in rather than your own then you will be using the admin account’s access rights rather than your own.
I don’t use the phone app (I do remote access via Webdav), so I can’t help there I’m afraid but someone else may be able to help, or just look in the settings of the app (which version are you using, Android or iPhone?).
I am using both. My phone is android and my wife has an iPhone.
I guess you could always try uninstalling and reinstalling it on one of them, as a test. It may or may not ask for log-in credentials again after that, depending on quite how thorough the uninstaller is in not leaving (arguably sensitive) data behind.
