Sharespace 8TB not updating because it's up to date ? No ctorrent tab either!

Hi guys,

Atm I’ve purchased a 8TB Sharespace and have it practically completely set it up allthough I have the following issues :

  • I’ve tried the automatic updater and the device keeps telling me it’s up to date allthough it’s 2.1.96 with MioNet 4.2.27. As I’ve read, version 2.2.8 is out. WD Customer support is not being helpfull at all as the customer rep that is responding to me allways seems to find other things for me to do… disabling my network firewall, reset the device, rebuild twonky server and so on and so on… Which are totally NOT related things because of the simple fact that the device would give me an error that it’s not getting outside ! After 2 weeks I’m getting quite fed up with it.

  • I wanted to set up Ctorrent under the downloader account but it’s just not there… the tab is not showing. I’ve looked in every possible tab as admin and as downloader. I don’t see any reference to it at all ! How do you activate it ?

Possibly the 2nd issue is related to the firmware not updating but as WD refused to give me the manual file to upgrade the device my hands are tied. I cannot do anything.

I quote :

“In order to prevent the downgrade of the device to be done inadvertently by our customers;
There WD does not provide manual firmware for our Network drives (Sharespace, MyBook).”

(notice the spelling errors ? and I want to UPGRADE not DOWNGRADE)

If anyone has any pointers I would be very gratefull as I’m starting to get desperate…

Where have you read that there is newer firmware?

On the downloads page it says the specs are:

This comes from a support engineer. Seems i have 2.1.96 while you have 2.1.92…

Further in the support ticket they told me that they pulled the version 2.1.96 offline and are investigating.

i have had the same feelings as you when i first bought my 8TB sharespace. i saw in the manual a section on Ctorrent but was unable to find it once i logged to the drive’s webpage!

After a long story with the WD tech support i was given the feedback that they have released a 2.2.8 but then recalled it due to instability, which makes 2.9.6 the latest (i have this one by the way).

As to the tech support’s answer, i think what that guy wanted to tell you was: “we will not give you manually the firmware, because in case you screw it up, you will have a hard time downgrading back to your working firmware” !!

Anyway i hope this helps, pls feel free to pour in more comments as we all await the torrent-supporting firmware to make the downloader feature worth anything as it’s worth really [deleted] now!!! lol

Argh this is almost like a bad april fools joke.

I have given up on having my device in the office, thrown it in my wardrobe at home and am only using it as an FTP server.

Next time I’ll buy a QNAP.

Can you guys believe that the WD sharespace only recognises the first partition on an external disc? None of my 8 WD 1 TB discs came formatted with one single partition. This meant that I couldn’t transfer my files directly from the discs.

Sorry, no intention of stealing your thread. I just had to vent  my anger :).

same here i get emails from tech support and they tell me to update from the device but how to update something that keeps telling me that it up to date ? sorry that tech support is anything than support.

Let me clear up some confusion.  The 2.1.96 firmware was a factory-release firmware.  The 2.2.8 firmware was replaced with the 2.2.9 firmware.  If your drive is not on the 2.2.9 firmware and reports it is up-to-date, I would advise that you contact technical phone support.

I just had tech support come back to me last night. Apparently the 2.2.9 software was NOT released yet and they only released it just now.  I was finally able to run an update through the Sharespace itself and my problem was resolved. Finally my torrent is showing !!! After almost 2 months.

Now the only thing I have to figure out is why the Ctorrent software won’t let me use more then 3 torrents at a time. It just queue’s up the rest apparently…

But for everyone else, GET YOUR UPDATE NOW, it fixes this issue !
