Hi,
I have a WD My Cloud Mirror gen 2 and want to attached 2 or 3 external USB 3.0 hard drives. As the hard drives will be plugged in 24/7 it is very important for me that they go to sleep mode / standby to reduce power consumption and HDD wear.
At the moment I have attached a seagate st4000dm000 4TB 3.5" HDD in a cheap USB 3.0 enclosure. When plugged in the my clould it is spinning all the time. If I SSH “hdparm -S 179 /dev/sdd” It will spin down immediately after the HDD has stopped being used by a user. It does not seem like it is waiting 14 minutes + 55 seconds? After entering sleep mode I measure the power consumption to be 8 watt from the HDD enclosure. This is too much for me as the HDD itself only uses about 1 watt when sleeping.
Therefore I am thinking about how the My Clould act when a WD external HDD is attached. For example My book or My passport. Are the My Clould able to power-manage these drives better than external hard drives from other manufactures? And does anybody know the power consumption in stand by from a My Book enclosure?
